Picking Team Colors

Why is there no option to pick your army colors?

A functionality I always liked in Spring lobby was the ability to pick a whole spectrum of colors. Sure it doesn't really serve any functional purpose, but being able to have your units wear your personal favorite colors is something I've thought to be very charming.

Besides the functionality for it is clearly still there in the engine.

Some in-game way to do this would be desireable, but is a low priority task because the default works well enough. Keep in mind this only works for you, other players will see no difference; this is by design.

I'd love to have this as an option tbh. (I'd always pick purple.)

And you should always pick purple or whatever color. It's visual muscle memory to help you out.

I tend to use Self-Teal for that. Ending up as Green on replays makes me sad though.

Which "this"? Just editing the palette so you see yourself as purple is doable, see the wiki page (edit the attached config file and pick Custom in the ingame picker).

We don't allow people to choose how others will see them (for example making everyone else also see you as purple) because this could ruin the intuitive red/blue colour scheme (for example if you picked red you would confuse your allies; worse still if there was also an enemy who was also red).

I suppose, but there's also the option to choose simple colors for everyone as well so that they see themselves (green), enemies (red), and allies (blue). While also having the option to choose "true" colors where everyone appears as the color they have selected for themselves.

It's possible to make a widget that synchronizes colors across people and then distribute it to willing people (for example such that if we both have the widget, I always see you as purple and you always see me as green).

I don't think something like this would be included in ZK itself because allowing people to arbitrarily control your colors sounds like a way to shoot yourself in the foot though.

Maybe this is just my mild colorblindness but even in small team games I can end up with this atrocious green vs yellow/orange garbage like this:

Usually picks better colours in replays though, so it might just be some self-green nonsense in the default teamcolor scheme.
That said, it doesn't scale up all that well either, when I watch 1Xv1X games, it's nearly impossible to get clean reads on which team is which without switching to one of the modes which just makes them all blue vs red. Too many close hues and luminosities get mixed up between teams. Not that I'm saying that improving the color distribution would be enough to deal with 20-30 player colors being easily distinguishable, just that I don't think that color selection like other RTS games is necessarily worse than what we have.

Probably you should explain it better, the way I see your screenshot is: green is quite distinguishable from yellow on the map icons; I am less able to distinguish yellow/orange, but no big problems as they are both enemies.

If you would see some colors from left (Player) team closer to some colors from right (AI), maybe what we need is some kind of color adjustment for how everybody sees colors. Still that should probably be implemented by someone who has a problem as the developers can't test otherwise at all...

At some point in the past it was possible to choose colors and it was very confusing (each game different scheme you could not easily assess what is happening), so would not like to get back to that.

I don't see anything wrong with the screenshot. Keep in mind letting people choose their own colours doesn't necessarily improve the situation here because regardless of how you perceive colours (ie. whether you are colorblind or not) they may pick colors that look even closer to you than what the defaults have.

Being able to pick your own colours on servers would be cool, and for other people to see those colours too.

You can write a widget that does this and distribute it to willing people. Then you'll be able to see each other the way you want.
