Just a thought, (and it would probably be difficult to add)

Would be interesting to have maps with more than 1 layer. It could be used to have ice covered water. So subs will be under land units. Tunnels would add more passageways (if you thought hide and seal was bad…) tunnels would also be a no fly zone, giving them a terrain restriction, other than heavy AA.

So, earth 2150? For some reason that game never got popular. Maybe someone need to do an analysis of that game's design choices....

You could try hacking around an ice sheet with existing tools though. Render ice on top of water, change all units' pathing to be technically hovercraft so they can move "on water", explode projectiles on contact with the ice etc.

You could try tunnels that just let you move/garrison units into an entrypoint and then they just get magically shifted underground to an endpoint.

The current single-layer architecture is ingrained fairly deep in the engine so I wouldn't count on anything reasonably polished, let alone a general multi-layer system.

Yes, it would take a lot of work… most will probably be engine work. It would need a few things figured out, such as the UI. How do you determine what layer is the destination of the move command.

Another thing is is it worth it? Will tunnels be too porky, where it has not only small passageways, but is cheaper as anti air and anti nuke is not required, Artillery may have issues when there is a ceiling, and super weapons may not reach it.

It’s mainly an idea. There would be menu problems to solve.

I always wish spiders could go on the pipes in the north part of industrial revolution.

It would be a very interesting mod.

I think it would need an engine update, not a mod.
