If your enemy relies on shields and fortresses, Impaler becomes a great unit. The Impaler can wear down shields, even if there's a lot, as long has you have enough metal to construct them, shields can be countered. What about terraforming? The missiles go far over any walls, unless you plan on making a wall 10239023921382183 kilometers high. Since fortresses are non moving and shields slow, the Impaler is a great counter for fortresses and shields.

Yes, there are better ways to drain shields, but 1/2 drained shields quickly die to 3-4 Impalers so bring in a tremor or 3-4 firewalkers + 3-4 Impalers and even a 5-6 shield covered proc. base will die at no loss to the attacker whereas the same metal in assault, skirmisher, or raider units will just die to the proc.

This game is heavily geared toward mobile units. Static defense (proc.) is for when a team is trying to buy time or in a bad skill match-up and then also just to buy time. Lotus turrets usually are the only proc. high level players will build.
