My rankup to blue broke...

The rating system is inscrutable sometimes. Win some more games.

dunno said something about there being a rank buffer to get to blue and he says i haven't crossed it yet. I'm confused as to what he means because I had to go at around the time of my last post. Could you elaborate on this Aquanim?

Some background on the "rank buffer": to avoid people that are very close to the threshold between ranks to change rank up and down depending on the result of few games (which would be annoying for everybody), there is a mechanism in place to "place you" in next rank just when you are already further from the threshold (for example 20% of the way to next rank).

Another thing to keep in mind: the ratings are (re)computed after rated game for everybody (not just for the players in that game). This means that the system can "update its understanding" of how good a team was based on "future games". Assuming a new player comes that is a super expert (maybe previous player, maybe played campaign, etc.). initially the system does not know anything about the new player - gives it a "small rating" (most new players are not that good), and puts the player in your team. Assume the new player (because his initial rating was "too low" compared to real skills), wins 50 games in a row (exaggerated but you get the idea). Now, in the first game he played, the team in which he was had quite a big advantage (because he was really a good player) so the rating system takes that into account (by decreasing a bit how he assess the first victory as it understands now it was an easy victory). Of course practically this is more complex - as it does it based on all games and players at once.

In my experience, if you want to progress faster, player smaller games. You gain much more rating by winning 4x4 compared to 16x16.

My guess about the 30% / 20% is that previously the ranking system was adjusting the opinion about you faster (the system was realizing that you are better than he thought), but these are details. Good luck making your way up the ladder (I find that easier to track than progress to next level, plus I see the names of the people close to me as a bonus)!
