I've been thinking about area selection/commands recently.

Sometimes it feels clunky to commands like area mex by having to drag out a radius of a perfect circle. Making boxes with a free height/width (like area select) might be easier. Like for selecting precise areas of mexes that you want to claim, or area attacking or area guarding a front line of units.

I wonder if rectangles would be a nicer shape for all area commands?

Set Target has both types, a circle and a rectangle (aligned to XZ plane of the map, not the camera) and I prefere using box select target.

I used to think that circles are more natural and smoother than boxes, but then I realized, drawing rectangles with the mouse actually allows you to easily control the dimensions for both the y and x axis, so it gives you more degrees of freedom than just circles where you can only control the radius.
You can argue that the dimensionality of a circle area command actually have 3 dimensions of input. Center of circle in x and y dimension and radius as it's own input dimension.
However, a rectangle still beats it with 4 dimensions of input considering it has start x, start y, end x and end y in dimensions of input.

Oh, and with camera position, you can argue that rectangles also use the camera frustrum giving it even more dimensions than the circle area command that is always a cylinder that is focused on the ground.
It is really annoying to target air units with area circle commands because as the circle used for the cylinder of targeting will be drawn along the ground.

Actually, they are not even circle area commands, they are infinite cylinder VOLUME commands!!!

I tried that in War of Dots but it is kinda slow.
A box or a circle is faster to make.
