SimCity reddit is FULL of complaints. EA is kinda killing themself with DRM, I like that hehe. Everybody's biggest fear was server problems, DRM people say "nah we swear you will never ever have problems, ignore it, everything will be super fine" and boom, every player's fears have come true. Amazon removed the game from their shop 'cause everybody was complaining - they paid 60$ and can't play. Oh look what I found! If EA Games Sold Pizza...

The same problem killed Ubisoft for me. Really, how stupid do you have to be to start selling a game when holidays are inbound while your servers aren't capable of handling so many players? We were anticipating the new settlers game a few years ago, and i believe me and my family haven't played a single copmlete match in that game. We tried 2 days and then gave up. Not to mention how every settler game before could be played on multiple computers at once, provided everyone started the game with the CD, while the new game killed that family experience. Heck, you couldn't even register more than 1 account per CD. Seriously, are we expected to buy 3-4 of those or what?

Let's make an open source version! Simcity in space!

What exactly is new about EA not caring about customers?

I was just trying to satisfy Licho's thirst for knowledge. :(

The servers are crashing right now and people are losing their whole cities, etc. This is all because of the always online DRM stuff, why does a single player game even need servers? It's design seems fine, I suspect it will be a half decent game in a couple months, once the severs are stable and maybe if they increase the land size of the cities (right now, the map areas are very small), but frankly after this poor effort I wouldn't want to give EA my money.

I wonder how much of that brokenness is induced by load caused by actual players, and how much is caused by people willing to make a point regarding what a bad idea this whole cloudy-drm-shit-despite-single-player is.

Either way its bullshit. Imagine when another new simcity comes up and here it is servers OFF buy new one. Singleplayer online is total bullshit.

I totally agree. I don't like how zk's single player mission require you to use server either...

They don't. That's just that the default interface to run them is through a website. I wonder if the DRM thing is even useful in the long run? Cracking would require server emulation, but they already have a version of this for online-only games like Diablo 3 so we'll have to see in the long run whether this works.

Yup. All it needs is someone checking network messages and emulating them. This didn't stop people from creating offline versions/servers for WC3, C&C:TT, SC2 and even whole MMOs. BUT, if SimCity servers are never online and everybody has trouble connecting and playing the game, THEN DRM will - for the first time in history - be successful at preventing this. HARR! :)

For SimCity, I read that the simulation is actually run on EA's server... its not just the license check that require the servers. So making an offline version means you can't just find the right conditional jump and replace it with a NOP or straight jump...

Same for MMOs. People still managed to create servers, sometimes better than the original.

You can play ZK missions offline :P, you can download them and play them later.

I know you can do that... now try to do it with your standard zk install, when you want to play SP because your internet connection is down. Did you download all missions manually just in case you wanted to play SP? I'm sure you didn't. Installer could/should download SP content... and zkl could update SP content when online.

...when KR declares it at least Beta-state.

Also the campaign UI and progression is still web-based; someone would need to port it.
