I will just point out that the canon siege tank is just this (zero-xp transition between a long-range artillery turret and short-range assault mobile). Of course, only two similar cases in ZK transition between static and mobile versions of same thing.

I have a proposal that both allows removing the current system AND increasing number of unit morphs. It works like this:

1) add a lot of xp morphs for everything, at least 2 per unit.

2) excise the resulting changeset and pre-existing morphdefs into a separate mode.
