I still don't really understand why anybody in this thread is wasting their time

even if Sheep has a point and this isn't just him further pursuing a grudge against Licho and whoever for not doing Sheep's bidding, what's the point of discussing it here?

wtf is the endgame here? you want to lead the zk userbase in some kind of bloody revolution against current devs? and what good do you think that's gonna do? you think they'll put you in charge and start taking orders?

I mean, if you seriously thought you would get what you want out of sane and reasonable conversation with the current devs, you'd be having that conversation privately. Instead you're, what, trying to rile up a mob?

Where is the (bandwidth/money) contribution of ZK to the spring community for the download services ZKL has abused for years (leading to the split with spring community despite false pretenses)?

@any Spring devs around:
1) is anyone from that side of the fence interested in pursuing this?
2) does this explanation for the split have any basis in fact?

'cos, I mean, if Sheep's just bullshitting here then I support a ban for bringing the game into disrepute

... and if I'm right, you'll just advise everyone to stop talking to me?
Mindless loyalty. Total lack of balance... AUrankAdminAquanim, go back to balance threads, I don't waste my time in those, as none of the balance "problems" are really blocking steam release.

nobody forces you to take part in this discussion... if you feel uncomfortable, you can just leave this thread alone. Just do like licho and the rest of #zkdev... do not comment... the problem will go away!

If you now want to add "discuss problems related to project governance" to the list of bannable offenses, be my guest. It will just show how bad it has become...

Well, no. I do want to add "wilfully lying about problems related to project governance, with the purpose of damaging the project" to the list of bannable offenses.

I do note that you didn't actually answer my question about what the point of discussing this here is. Do you not want to admit your actual motive?

I also question why somebody who doesn't play the game and doesn't contribute to the game cares about Steam release. That leaves me only with the possible motive that you have some desires for revenge against #zkdev... and if you're willing to bring Zero-K into disrepute solely for something like revenge, I do not want you involved with the project at all.

AUrankAdminAquanim, you are the prototypical populist community member that I've been complaining about... who only seem interested in attacking me or finding flaws in my arguments, without ever conceding what is actually damaging the community when it is reported by me. Just like I asked CHrankConnetable before, what do you think is preventing progress from being made? Me making a few posts every 3 months or the fact that project has made choices rendering the project unattractive for new contributors, all while expecting to find incentives for a sole contributors? :)

There is no better way to illustrate the "shoot the messenger" habit this community has developed, when faced with embarrassing opinions/facts. I'm pretty sure you are raging because I've been cautious about not breaching the CoC... else, why would you even hope to ban someone from a perfectly civil discussion? Maybe you are troubled that nobody down-votes me... it must be pretty unnerving. Be assured, I correctly expected the fact that my posts would get no up-votes... or I'd not point fingers at an apathetic community which allows bad governance to constantly delay bug-fixing in favor of new features and waste money on penis-enlarging servers... (CoC breach? maybe! jump on it!)

No. I prefer to comment on your actual moves and as long as you are only interested in shooting the messenger, this is fair game. Accusing me of having a hidden agenda is silly, but since what I write is too embarrassing ("even if Sheep has a point"), you prefer to fantasize on what I do not write. Why do you even bother personally, AUrankAdminAquanim? Are you personally affected? Are you afraid of change?

What is at stake, AUrankAdminAquanim? Faith? Pride? Ego? Power? Control? Money? Moderator privileges?
IMO, none of that seems relevant for players who are reporting pretty worrying problems, while waiting for an influx of new players to play with, patiently, all while making "non-tax deductible donations" with the "reasonable" expectation that it won't be wasted.

PRICELESS!
I guess it would only apply to a few "carefully selected" individuals... or you may end up in a pretty uncomfortable situation :)

Again... what is damaging the project? That someone is reporting on its failures?
I'm pretty sure you dream about burning journalists when they report things that make you feel betrayed... is it time to bring up the Godwin's Law to gracefully end this useless exchange with you?

I certainly don't think you are helping, or that you even intend to help. In fact I think you are deliberately setting out to harm the project to satisfy your own wounded ego. You're indeeed not having much of an impact, but it's not as though you have the power to do any more.

The project is unattractive for new contributors for many reasons, and most of those reasons have nothing much to do with any decisions made by current developers. First and foremost, it is hard work.
[Spoiler]

If you want me to stop criticising you, then you're going to have to convince me that you actually have the best interests of Zero-K at heart. I see no reason to believe that at present. Your personal grudge against Licho is quite transparent.

Do you think that by just saying this, that magically makes it so?

I don't understand why you think I have much faith in the current path of ZK development. I think it's quite likely that the game will never reach the point of Steam release, simply because there aren't enough interested people. That being said, I don't think that anything you are doing is at all helpful.

Dunno where this came from either lmao.

I don't have much faith in ZK reaching Steam, I'm not in any way responsible for ZK so pride and ego don't come into it, I don't control anything about the game's development, I don't make or lose any money out of it, and I'm not a moderator.

I'm here solely because I enjoy playing the game, I'd like to play it with more people if possible, and I believe that your aims in this thread run counter to that.

Don't see why. As far as I know, pretty much everyone else who talks about ZK development is either right, or honestly mistaken.

You, on the other hand, I suspect of deliberate fabrication and embellishment.

I guess Sheep is talking about the general deploy failure of ZeroK
+0 / -0
tl;dr: I'd be listening if somebody who demonstratively cared about ZK succeeding (i.e. had put actual work into the project) raised issues with how the project is run

when it's some blowhard blow-in with an obvious axe to grind, and nobody steps forward to support that opinion, I don't think their opinion is worth much

FYI here's an explanation by Licho on why the more expensive servers were bought. TL;DR:
  • main reason: Steam release was expected so SSD was needed (last bottleneck)
  • some crucial "vkvm" feature was only offered by a few hosts
  • current setup became unavailable near the end of the previous lease so something sufficient had to be found quickly

What are the current barriers to release on Steam?

Lobby

Lobby is perhaps not biggest, we could release with current lobby even (with visual tweaks) and there are two replacements in pipeline - refurbished ZK lobby (with the pretty screen), Quantum does some work on that atm and ZKSWL by Ikinz and Anarchid.

More work waits in things like tweaking distribution methods to work well steam and yet allow independent updates, making proper matchmaking, reviving planetwars ..
those sorts of things..
I'm trying to work on those when time permits. When those things are done i will return to ZK lobby refurbish (if ZKSWL is not ready by then)

Have a look there Lynx:

https://github.com/ZeroK-RTS/Zero-K-Infrastructure/issues
https://github.com/ZeroK-RTS/Zero-K/issues

Look at the number of bugs, how old they are, how acceptable it is to ignore them.

Use your own judgment. Even if you are not a coder, you can try to evaluate the time it will take to fix those based on past performance and past promises/announced delays.

I'm not sure at which point it has been decided that steam infra would rely on a single server (thus, a SPOF)... but the increasing coupling of infra is not unrelated to this fact (nor is it unrelated to problems in recruiting new contributors).

I can't wait to see steam users kicked out of server because of required updates (much harder to find a timeslot to patch windows when players are around the globe) and how bad it will look if anything happens that prevents players from playing for many hours. Including scheduled updates.

production environment without server redundancy? fail...

anyway, problem is evident from Licho's post.

I

single point of failure... hardware, software, human.

There is many more small issues reported, like GUI stuff overlapping and such.

That are only the issues with lobby. Game, website, missions, etc everything else has its own list of issues too or is missing, many things go unreported.

Wasn't there a new installer that someone (not part of the elites) offered?
If it is not being used... I guess it can be considered like a message: we are not interested in alternative options. Fix our 80% done stuff or go away...
