Or in other words, how do I improve my net condition here?
I'm not saying the regular 1000 ms lag is barring me from enjoying the game, but, for more than 3 times, I've encountered extreme, continuous lagging halfway in matching games and had to resign. I'm sure my connection is stable. Anybody experienced similar or any idea?

There is only one server, we joke that it's a laptop in licko's fridge to keep from over heating. I think the server is in Europe, I have heard of people who have strange lagging, like every second lags a second behind, almost quit. Super strange because he's a long time player and that was recent (lagging). I think he was zenfur? I hope this isn't some rare bug or something.

OMG.
And the strange lagging you describe is exactly my case and it typically happens halfway in the game. I do hope it's a "rare bug" since bugs can be fixed.

Yep. I have it too. It is a rare bug. It seems to happen only to some players, and some players lag out slower or faster. It seems to happen in those big laggy teamgames. The "fake ping" it generates is not network lag.

It got introduced months ago, and it happens rarely enough for me to not usually be a problem. That said, when it happens, it makes the game unplayable. (I have a feeling around that time catching up to games became laggier and slower, but that might be just a feeling)

Btw, you can see who has the bug by pressing tab in the laggy teamgame. Which player has ping in seconds has it.

#disable steamoverlay?

Does it happen only when the game is already laggy/low fps? Or can it also happen with few units in play?

This bug started happening before steamrelease stopped being a joke in the community. And yes, it happens only when lagging.

To test with hosting on your machine, use steam friend invite within single-player.
This will create self-hosted game without any routing through the zero-k.info server.

@Fumichan Last time I played in Beijing, I had the same lag. Depends on your Internet provider (mobile seems to work better than fixed broadband).

It happened to me in 1v1 games too. That's why it was so frustrating. I had to resign when I was almost winning.

I'm right in Beijing. Is it just because I'm far from the server? Well that should explain the constant 1s lag but what about the extreme lag / drop? I don't find such a problem in other games (e.g. CSGO). Wondering if I could solve it by using VPN or something.

Sometimes laptop overheats even in the fridge so CPU has to throttle... this is what we have to live with...

Just try to open command line and do ping zero-k.info this should tell you an estimate of round trip time from your PC to the server... If it's significantly below 1s than the problem could be elsewhere and not in network

For example I get around 57ms ping from Russia(optical fiber)
But I can confirm sometimes game becomes unresposive for 1-2 seconds... and it does not seem network related more likely server/spring is choking with something... Like someone decided to do garbage collection and it locked all the shit for second :\

Does LUA make garbage collection? :P Has anyone tested how it's done? Stop the world? Any guarantees on max. time it takes?

@Fumichan I think it's because of China's firewall. Most games I play have the same issue, except if they have servers right in China. But last time I used a China Unicom mobile broadband it was faster.

Just tested this way and it never works. One of my friend and I always drop at start of the game.

@Fumichan when i was living in china in 2010, the lag was worse than from europe, but acceptable. i do not think at that time, that there was constant impact from the great firewall. at gamestart, lag was horrible for several seconds, but then it went smooth with around 400-500ms. but things change...
