Constantly Desyncing

Hello all.

I am having some pretty rough de-sync issues, even when I am hosting. I have three friends who play ZK as well, and they do not have any de-sync issues at all, so it must be something on my end. However- I consistently play on different networks, and all of them are pretty decent. I find it hard to believe that all the networks I play on all have the same issue causing a de-sync, but none of my friends have any similar issues. Any ideas?

is it a real de-sync where the games tells you are desynced? If yes try to clear the path cache or maybe even a real install. Do you have an example game where this happened?
Maybe it is just the ping, do you go over VPN?

Assuming you installed through Steam try verifying file integrity.

If you can grab an infolog.txt (from the install folder, there is a link in the help menu) after a game where you desynced and share it that would help a lot.

There's a recently added setting that lets you adjust some of the network properties for when you host a game. Look in the Game tab for Network Connection. I don't know which option is best for your situation (Fast or Reliable) but one of those might be an improvement over the Balanced option.

It sounds like broken game files. Redownloading should work.

Alright, thanks for the tips. I have re-validated in the past, to no avail, but I have done so again. I'll let you guys know if the issue continues.

For reference, here is one of my desync reports: https://github.com/ZeroK-RTS/CrashReports/issues/32909

I appreciate all the help, my friends and I greatly enjoy the game. :)

Looks like corrupt game data to me. Specifically, the Minotaur wreckage model. I suppose the thing to try would be to see if you regularly get desyncs after a Minotaur is destroyed.

I think previous errors of that kind have been fixed by validating the game files so hopefully your issue is now resolved. If you get the same error with "correap_dead.s3o" after revalidating you might need to try a reinstall.

I can confirm that re-validating the game files does not fix the issue. After experiencing this issue just now, I immediately re-validated, and got another de-sync in the very next game. This is consistent with issues I have had over the past few months of on and off games with my friends, where I try re-validating to fix the issue and get inconsistent results. I will experiment with routine re-installs and report back.

Looking through my recent log files it definitely is a corrupted file issue related to destroyed unit models. That said, I have re-installed and re-verified the game multiple times and I am still encountering this issue. Any ideas? I am going to see if my friend will send me his copy of the destroyed unit files to see if that helps.

Edit: I did try setting the network drop down to "reliable". This had no discernible effect on fixing the issue.

Being unable to load some models will certainly cause a desync. Check whether you're having permissions issues, or perhaps your hard drive is broken.

My SSD should be in working order- I have no issues with file integrity in any other context. Random and Sequential read write speeds are nominal for my drive and I have experienced zero file corruption.

That said, I do have approximately half the drive un-allocated after a failed attempt at setting up an Arch Linux install. Due to limitations with the windows partition manager, I can't add all of this space back into my main partition. I set my main partition into dynamic mode in a failed attempt to fix that, and I can't change it back without risking all of my data. While my stuff is backed up, I don't want to spend the day re-configuring all my stuff if I mess up my partition.

TLDR: Do you think my partition being in Dynamic NTFS instead of Basic could cause problems with Zero-K?

Permission wise, I am the primary (only) user of my machine, and the account that I use for daily use has full control over the drive Zero-K is installed on.

If I had those problems, I would get a standalone version of ZeroK to install alongside the Steam one just to take Steam out of the picture. Then look at the logs for that version.

ZeroK uses a VFS, and I think there is a chance that the way it handles files may not be 100% compatible with the dynamic disk management being done by the OS.

Okay, an update:

I finally got around to "fixing" my partitions, and the one that stores Zerok is now in "Basic" instead of "Dynamic" mode. This did not fix the issue, and I still experience de-syncs pretty consistently. I also tried forcing steam to use an entirely different drive for Zerok, but that didn't have an effect on the de-syncs either.

I tried installing a standalone version of Zerok a while back, but I still had de-sync issues with that installation. Now that I have my partitions fixed up, though, I will try again to see if there is any improvement.
