i didnt understand overdrive so i made a website simulating it

i posted it on the discord and people seemed interested in it so i figured the forum is a better place to post it

its kinda unfinished, atm you can only place "mexes" with a 2.0 value, and "solars" that give 2 energy
it also overdrives assuming that all energy is excess, and that your storage is at 100%

you use it by dragging mex and solar nodes from the top panel, and placing them within range. when you press the "simulate" button, the mex values will change to represent their income.

keep in mind that if you go back into edit mode, the mex values will still display their overdrive income, and will only update again after you press simulate again

plz post if u have any bugs, what features youd like, how useful would it be for you, if its confusing to use, etc

i can probably add and fix things decently quick

SWEET! Now add pylon, and let people put 2 mexes and a pylon linking them so they realize this doesn't produce any extra metal.

Are the two pictures below correct?

It seems like 2 of the mexes get the same production even if they are connected or not - that does not seem right.

Did you drag and drop new stuff while you were in simulation mode?

Also E and M totals would be nice.

somewhat; basically the overdrive area is a square internally for now, even though it appears as a circle. so circles that can appear disconnected might still be internally connected. getting fixed soon...

FRrankmalric did you reset by switching modes back and forth?

I like it USranktherxyy. It looks nice and I very much like that you can connect and disconnect.

If you're looking for feedback/wishlist:
  • A total output/investment table would be useful, especially if you can compare various setups.
  • Add a total potential output to the table, so you can see how much not connecting is costing you.
  • Add option to have base and commander income and have them on by default.
  • Simulating that energy doesn't overdrive if you're spending it will clarify the outcome a lot.
  • Add a reset or some way to remove mex/solars.
  • Make mex always be the top layer so you don't have solars blocking you from seeing output.
  • Maybe add an explanation or link to the relevant principles on the wiki? I came to understand OD a lot better when someone mentioned that it increases by base income every time I quadruple energy input.
  • Add a time to pay back output.

So what happens in a real game if I make three mex and two solar is that I get zero overdrive and a flat 10m+10e/sec that matches the 10BP of my free factory and the 10 (mean) BP of my com. This seems intentional and IMO should be considered the default starting economy. I would want everyone to understand this, but atm if I plug this setup into your simulation it'll tell me I get overdrive, which might harm people's understanding more than it helps. People with poor understanding of OD (your target demographic) may not know enough to mentally adjust the results.

I agree, great first draft! I would add my own bulletpoint to above:

  • Enhance simulation with checkbox, spend metal. When ticked, attempts to spend all income on nebulous constant project, i.e. 4 mexes + 7 solars => (+2e/s)*7 solars and (+2.5m/s & -1e/s)*4 mexes and (-10m/s -10e/s) spending for (+0m/s and +0e/s) net income

Sorry, I did not remember exactly what I did, but totally possible. Would be nice to block adding stuff in simulation mode if that is a problem to avoid other people getting confused.

Anyhow very good idea to make this tool to present things in a simple way! Nice work.

Low effort suggestion: add a "M: " and "E: " labels for all the values, for people that don't have an idea what they are (it is clear for me, but don't think it is obvious).
