Moving in formation

There is that slider that allows you to choose one of four positions a unit should supposedly take when moving in bulk, therefore making a formation. This doesn't happen, so artillery units end up rushing like there is no tomorrow, and the actual heavy units follow. This is annoying and I don't understand why it doesn't work. Microing unit selection is about the worst thing imaginable.

The formation rank unit state is more specific in its function than that.

Move command + click: Go to the target point at best individual speed.
Move command + drag: Assemble in formation along the dragged line at best individual speed, with formation rank determining whether each unit is in front of, on or behind it.
Move command + control-click: Assemble around the target point in a formation identical to the current one, matching speeds with the other selected units.

For the result you want, you should line move the units into formation first, then control move them.

Formation rank is a niche feature that takes the line you draw, and projects other lines forwards and backwards from the line you draw and splits different groups of units to the appropriate lines, based on the state of those units. Formation rank projects the lines in a chiral way, which means the direction that you draw your line is what determines what "forward" means.

You can adjust the spacing of your Formation Rank lines by unticking simple settings and adjusting the slider in Settings/Interface/Line Formations -> Formation rank spacing.
