My Zero-K games were crashing all day today.
It would crash where the game would say "Loading gamedata definitions"
So i Deleted the Zero-K file since inside the file there is no "uninstall Zero-k" file.
Went to the website and downloaded a fresh install of zero-K.

Upon installing i get the following messages
"startup directory is not writable. Please use the newly created desktop icon to start Zero-K not the old one! Zero-K.exe will be moved to C:\Users\###\Documents\my Games\Spring"
So i push ok, that's all i can push,

Then it gives me an error message.
"Move failed, please copy Zero-K.exe to a writable folder"

Do what it says, move zero-k.exe to some place which is writable.

I assume it is the same on linux as on windows for this. Just try putting it My Documents or something, somewhere that is writable.

Ah, Licho has the magic question! I cant seem to locate Zero-k.exe, I have a shortcut now in the start menu, But when i search for zero-k, it only gives me that one file thats a shortcut in the start menu, and when checked the properties of the file, it shows it as only a shortcut, not the .exe file.

Now i can start zero-k from this shortcut for some reason. Though every time i do it now from this shortcut it says.
-----
"Startup directory is not writable.
Please use the newly created desktop icon to start zero-k not the old one!
Zero-k.exe will be moved to C:\users\###\Desktop\zero k\Spring"
-----

The C:\users\###\Desktop\zero k\Spring, is the location of the install for a recent attempt, when it asked me for a location to install zero-k.
(I was like AWESOME ITS WORKING!)

Inside the C:\users\###\Desktop\zero k\Spring, there is no zero-k.exe file. SAD FACE :(

after i push ok for the first prompt, it then says

Move failed, please copy Zero-k.exe to a writable folder

Which is odd cause i can copy and paste whatever into that folder on the desktop...

P.S. Thanks so much for your hard work on such a great game. And its nice to get better customer support than i ever did on WoW. and this game is FREE!!!
Yes i am telling all my friends to get it.

Why does it fail to copy? Do you have enough space in that folder?
Can user write into that folder?

You can download Zero-K.exe here http://zero-k.info/Wiki/Download
the portable link:

Oh yeah, there is lots of space still on my hard drive, its about half full. And the folder is on the desktop, can do whatever i wish to said folder. Hence the confusion...
Maybe its time to format the computer again...

I have had this problem on half the computers on which I try to install Zero-K, and on all of the computers in which I try to set a custom folder for the executable's location.

I'm not sure why it gives an error about the folder being writable. That strikes me as poor error handling.

I wish it would receive more attention, because it seems like the kind of error that would occur with anyone, regardless of how experienced they are, and since it occurs before one has even had the chance to play the game.

[G0G0]Dancer, were you able to get the game to work?

I made a video about this issue. Not a solution, just pointing out the problems people may have.

I fixed the error by manually copying the zero-k.exe from the spring install folder to C:\Users\###\Documents\my Games\Spring

Just wiped my machine and installed Windows 8.1 - I now have this bug. Easy to work-around, but it's there.

I have a mildly similar bug: after an update (can't remember which), all attempts at opening Zero-K.exe end in the classic "Zero-K has stopped working" window. Both my computers do this.

Running it on Windows 7, and replaced the .exe already. My primary HDD is only (roughly) half-full. Any ideas, guys?

USrankDerpyTheGreat, can you try Portable version? I heard people said Zero-K crash but when they try Portable version it work. ( http://zero-k.info/lobby/Zero-K.exe )

I get this error on Windows 10 technical release as well. Permissions have been checked on source and target folders and they are writable, and yet I still get the error.

I will have another look at the portable version when I get home from work.

So rather than running it within My Docs, I put it as a stand alone folder on a secondary drive and it works fine now.
