Since you bring up the topic. Some very short animations for guides would be really nice.

The problem I repeatedly run into is that you need to relay tons of info just to cover the basics in a very short period of time. As a result, tutorial vids end up like this: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=254445847

That's kind of a bad example, but in a lot of ways, it highlights the issue.

Edit: The irony of needing to play ZK to upvote is not lost on me :-)

the most ironic thing is that the video errored for me :P

Well it doesn't even have to be an animation. Take Cortex Command as an example.

Pretty sure you can explain the basics of overdrive and other ZK-things in the same way.

I really like the idea of that image; maybe we can make some? I figure screenshots for it would be better than hand-drawn.

For the economy system, maybe something like this?

- Build mexes on metal spots for metal (picture of mexes)
- Build generators anywhere for energy (picture of solars/windfarm)
- Excess resources are wasted (picture of filled metal bar doing the flashing thing)
- Link mexes and generators (picture of the overdrive grid, with some solars and mexes being connected)
- Excess energy speeds up linked mexes (picture of a brightly glowing overdriven mex)

I don't really like that implementation, but the basic idea seems good.

hand drawn is much beter, ingame images are messy...

the ZK art style is not exactly clear cut

Hand drawn? With MS paint? or do you have talent and will spend hours on these drawings. And after you stop drawing all these things they will be inconsistent in case they need update. Game screenshots ONLY.

I really like the comic panel idea.

I wish there were a photoshop filter for free that would essentially create GOOD cell shading from images (I could probably teach myself how to do it and create an action script for it, but I'm lazy).

I would use this comic strip method for evo if anyone actually thought it would work...

Would it?

Afaict, all spring games pretty much suffer from this problem, so if we all took similar means to solve it, that would be a good thing, right?

Think there was a widget that did make all unit looks a little like cartoon, but it was not very good...

Also there is question About "Attack" order. Famous A+click in Zero-K mean - "shoot derectly at his point". Why? Maybe it is better to swap "Fight" and "Attack" hotkeys.
"F" is "Fire that position". "A" is "Attack". Looks right as supposed.
I've read that it was swapped at one of the patches, but seems that it was reverted back.

Minor differences from Starcraft should be allowed.

Not all games should be Starcraft with different units.

(also ZK Fight is not attack-move anyway because it's "smart")

@FireStorm_01 - part of the problem with the previous approach is that just swapping A and F still breaks behavior when you want to attack a target.

Fundamentally, there are three different commands - fight; attack targets; attack ground. They're intertwingled onto two keys, and disentangling them is tricky.

RUrankFirestorm_01, back in the day I had the same suggestion. It got implemented quickly, but a public outcry of veteran players got it reverted quickly (although the official story on why it was reverted is different). Right along the lines of Anarchid's post, just read it with a smug tone.

I'll just sit back and watch as the steam hordes pour in (once we do the steam release) and this suggestion will pop up at least once a week.

It's not starcraft pros to worry about. They will be the most quick to adapt. It's the people who don't know anything (see my previous post in this thread).

imo starcraft pros may have more problems with zk... its very difrent micro/eco model when compared to ZK
