Logo Animation Suggestion

When I saw the Zero-K logo, I had an idea of how it could be animated for things like trailers, opening the game, etc. Basically, start with a total eclipse, then have the planet move to the left a little, until it is where it should be in the logo. Zoom out and bring in the other letters in the logo.

I made a concept of what this would look like. Granted, I have basically no animation experience, but I managed to throw this together to demonstrate the idea.

Yes?
Yes!
Shiny God appproves.

Throw in some ambient noise and it will look awesome.
Altrough you would need to either find the source planet/moon for ZK logo or just make one alike by yourself because it cannot be just a flat circle as in your demonstartion.

If you guys are interested I'd Blender that. Just wanna make sure that nobody else is already doing it.
Nice idea btw.

Maybe there's a way of importing spring models in Blender so that I could put some of them on the surface. Shouldn't get too fancy though.

Mind if I use the final animated logo for my casts? Depends on whether I think the result will work, but I'm thinking as something that would pop up when transitioning to the game itself. Watch the last NOTA tournament to get an idea of what I mean, though hopefully OBS multiplatform will allow for properly customizable scene transitions.

I can give you an animatable textured Scythe. Others can be reconstituted by the following path: s3o -> obj -> blender -> rearrange piece origins.

Some models which are actually used in assimp formats can be imported as-is. That's mostly some wreckages and gauss.

I felt like transforming the moon into a rock.. Hope you're ok with that.

Additionally I'm not yet sure whether It'd look nice with stars in the background or without.

CArankAdminShadowfury333 It be free for anyone to do whatever they want with it.

Update: Finally rendered a preview(without stars). I thought just zooming out would be a bit boring so I decided to move the camera itself instead. Please comment if you want me to do the original idea as well. Also I replaced the shader of the sun and the font which seems to have made it a bit too flickery. I'll fix that in the next render.

(you need an HTML5 compatible browser)

Update2:
Added a few units and changed lighting to improve their visibility. I have taken the background image myself, thus there shouldn't be any problems with copyrights.

I'd be happy about suggestions regarding lighting or units.

Update3:
Following the suggestions of ATrankhokomoko I added a fade-out of the singu. I'm thinking about letting the detri disappear in similar matter, or do you think that'd look unrealistic? I tried to improve the timing of the background but will probably put the fade-out even a bit earlier. Also a fade-in has been added.
@[TL]Beamer I agree with you if someone would only see this, but this isn't supposed to be a trailer.
AUrankAdminGoogleFrog This is hopefully less of a problem now

AUrankAdminSaktoth The light from the left is caused by the font interacting with the rock.. I could look for a workaround to remove it.
The rock doesn't have any RGB texture, it's all done via normal and displacement maps. The noise is caused by rendering the preview in a lower quality. (Even rendering such a preview takes about 6 hours per GPU)
Such a simple and short version can be done once this is finished.

Somehow I have the feeling that the unit placement is generally awkward and doesn't fit very well, but I probably shouldn't make it too complicated.
Do you have any suggestions regarding sound?

WIP:
Here's my own suggestion to make the whole thing more interesting and to get rid of the annoying singu light: Tacnuke Singu.
As this is taking a bit longer here are a few of my previous tries on explosions.

This is just to let you know I'm still working on it, I'll probably still change a lot as these explosions don't look very realistic.

Thanks for all the kudos.

DErankAdminmojjj you left a red period... why didn't you make it the same color as the forum post background color?

EDIT: turns out it's stuff that supposed to display, but doesn't display in the ZK lobby browser. A red dot is visible instead.

Looks good, now you've just got to put robots on the rock.

That is probably the best intro animation ever made for an open source game.

Suggestions, feel free to implement or disregard:
1) Only show units on places that won't be visible to the camera after it moves, the small light doesn't look in place imo.
2) Time the background fade effect with the sun revealing itself -> background starts fading when sun starts appearing behind the asteroid and the entire screen is black when the sun is maximally revealed.

That looks awesome! Great job!

One possible concern with the units on the moon is that people unfamiliar with Zero-K who see this animation might think that it has gameplay like Planetary Annihilation, with combat on spherical maps.

What happens if the camera move more directly to its final location? Currently it does a bit of a jerk left at the end.

The superfusion, at least, doesn't work on the visible side.

The lightning on the asteroid should probably not be white, possibly yellow. The other side of the planet is illuminated (the side away from the sun in the final graphic), you might want to make it a another colour, the red matching the suns halo or a contrasting colour to yellow.

The planet texture might be a bit noisey, or it might be your antialaising.

A clean version start starts black and the moon illuminates as the sun appears, and the text fades in with the sun rather than zooming in off screen might be good.
