First off, I am not a regular planes player, i'm just observing others. I like to see a good mix of units used based on differing situations. Recently I have seen many planes players using mostly avengers with few or no vamps. Additionally, shadows are almost always prefered over phoenexes. Do we need to rebalance the units to bring back a more even split of units? I don't think the general fighter should be better aganist air than the dedicated air superiority fighter.

Just a thought, what do you guys thing?

You observation are mostly correct. Surprised you have not noted the Licho though.

Phoenix sucks donkey balls. Shadow is kinda meh ever since the dive speed nerf, gets countered pretty hard by paying attention.
Licho is expensive, but the amount of AA the enemy needs to amass to kill one is much higher, so if you use it cautiously, it should be able to survive indefinitely, or at least until the enemy gets some really heavy AA.

Avenger/Swift > Vamp/Hawk. Avenger is more mobile and is capable of limited anti-ground attack. Hawk is slow as fuck, turns terribly (so loses small dogfights against Avenger), cant hit ground, and doesnt have as much burst damage. Sure, Hawk does have more health, but you are not supposed to put your fighters under much enemy AA fire in first place. The HP difference, while high, is not actually that noticeable when poor planes get into heavy AA.

If Hawk has a usecase it is in the much later part of the game when mobility isn't so important any more. (Like raiders being good in the early game but becoming worse later). Hawks have slightly less DPS/metal than Swifts but have higher health and are better at delivering that DPS in a sustained fashion in a large-scale engagement due to their flight characteristics. To use Hawks you need to either have lots of them or something else to cover their backs since they are defenceless there.

Mostly you can get away with only swifts since they do not share many of the weaknesses of raiders which make raiders worse later. I am not sure Hawk actually does have a usecase but if it does, it's the above. If Hawk were to be rebalanced I would want to see it be able to fulfill that role earlier in the game. (Maybe more DPS? not sure.)

I don't think Phoenix is inherently awful but it just doesn't do quite enough damage for its cost and its tendency to get blown away through its low HP. My preferred solution would be to make it cost slightly less. I think it would not take much.

At that stage static AA becomes dominant and Hawk remains unviable. At that stage putting fighters on frontlines makes them susceptible to enemy AA, especially chainsaws, so its much better to just have your ground-based AA which can shoot without exposing itself to enemy fire. And as a fast reaction force against enemy breakthrough, swifts are better because of higher mobility.
