The Phoenix is underpowered to the point of being almost useless. Given our skirmisher spam meta, I wonder if it would be considered to give them a gentle buff next patch to see what happens.

change weird ς shaped blomb pattern to a nice a-10 strafing run

The Phoenix was seriously suppressing skirms for a long time. I don't think a single counter in a single factory is the best way to shift the meta. If you're suggesting that the Pheonix can AFFORD to be better since it's not suppressing anything anymore (Which is why it's quais-owled), that's very fair. But frankly, the Thunderbird is just a more interesting AoE plane. Maybe the pheonix should get proper DoT ground burn or something to make it more physical and interactive.

Definitely agree with USrankdorsh that it could do with a better bombing behaviour, it's one of the things that makes Thunderbird more interesting.

This - I'm not a big fan of OWLing, especially of units I really like(d)

I think light owling (That is, making something an inferior choice because it being a strong choice is worse for the game, rather than making it so bad that you're removing it without removing it) is fine. It's better than removing a problem unit and keeps it in the game for niche utility or if it ever finds a new, more comfortable place in the meta that is good for the game. The question is how would it be different/stronger/better for the game than Thunderbird?

What I would do is give it a lot longer, more controlled bombing run, more AoE, have it set a burn DoT, probably up the weight. One of the origional visions for Pheonix was that it would suppress groups of raiders on large maps like comet catcher which have a disordinately long raider game. Planes are good on maps like that, so being able to beat raiders when they get to huge packs (This is like, flashspam days) was it's job. It ended up being better vs midrange units, which is what the Thunderbird excells at now. A long burn duration would allow it to lay down firewalls which assaults have no real trouble crossing but become dangerous for low HP units like raiders. Burn DoT also makes it excellent against large groups of statics like windgens, nanotowers, solars, LLt lines, and even factories early on (Which could either be an awesome early niche use in team games or totally abusive, but yeah).

Owled units usually require a re-role to enter back into circulation so that's where I'd go. But I am doing the 'Redesign' rather than 'tweak the balance by 5%' thing, which I am prone to do.

3 bombs of long-burning fireballs instead of oodles of firebombs, so it can burn down buildings and assaults, and create firewalls to delay an advancing opponent.

does longer burning on the ground necessarily mean more damage vs. buildings

Make it drop Claws. Persistent DOT of sorts, but also bounded in the amount of damage per run and also stackable.

Yes. If a fireball sits on a single point for 20 seconds and it only ignites units for 1 second, then mobile units can simply *leave the fire* and take only a tiny fraction of a second of fireball damage and 1 second of afterburn, while immobile buildings must sit around and enjoy 20 seconds of burning into the ground.

Fireballs can be stackable. Shift the damage from the "on-fire" condition to the fireball itself. Also, you'd have to go through another frustrating rename, because it's not a phoenix if it drops claws. But yes, claws would work for an "area-denial/slow targets bomber". Not really DOT though, just "only hits things that wait around for the claws to deploy".

I would gladly go through that rename to avoid having to see people write "Pheonix" every now and then.

GIve it double EMG isntead of napalm...

And.. slow damage, since we always give slow damag to units taht we don't knwo what to do with...

it could have quad leveler cannons that fire in duel bursts as it flies over with a burst of speed

i think igniting stuff without leaving fire on the ground is kind of neat since it caps the damage dealt versus larger units which allows it to still be relatively high versus smaller ones. if you removed the burning component you would either have to consequently lower damage versus raiders or increase it versus larger units which are hit more than once

edit: it also lets you wear down shielded units which adds to the power of air versus shield-ball

give it tri-octo newtons .. 3 sets of 8 newtons that literally crush units into the ground

Give it slow damage that deals extra slow damage over time.

I have always felt the Pheonix would be significantly more interesting as a 'light bomber' that you expect to lose some of. 100-150ish cost, and significantly less health would make it into a more unique sort of unit, capable of bombing undefended hoards and with large waves assaulting AA with established attrition, rather than significant failure on one unit dying.

less hp would mean that it would die even faster.
Planes already die to 2 or 3 defenders... Which dont realy cost anything.

I would like to see burndamage and burntime increase.

It's AoE was nerfed as well as dmg - I'd think just restoring the AoE would do the job.
