There's one thing I've always wanted in this game and I don't see any way to do it. I want real team colors. I want everyone to see everyone else's team colors the same way. I also want to be able to pick my team color. Am I just missing something?

I agree. If team colors are not currently possible, I think it would be a good idea to implement it, at least as an option. EDIT: I am easily swayed. I agree with Saktoth below.

The problem is we consistently have massive games from 4v4 to 10v10. It becomes increasingly difficult to tell teams apart in this kind of situation, especially if an ally and an enemy have similar colours. To fix this, colours are fixed: Allies are cold colours (blue, green) enemies are warm colours (red, yellow). You can F11 -> Disable teamcolours widget but since Zero-K lacks lobby support for teamcolour selection, most players probably won't have a colour (last i did this, everyone was black). Team colours exist primarily to help you distinguish players from eachother. This is really the most important role.

If you do disable teamcolors, make sure you type the !fixcolors or !teamcolors command before the game starts. That way, you won't be utterly confused from everyone being that color.

ZKL does support teamcolour selection but barely anyone uses that feature because they have local teamcolours. So even if you disabled the widget many players would be black because that is what teamcolour selection defaults to.

im ok with as it is. but in very large (dunno but i guess at least 9v9) games, there is a problem. some very bright yellow (enemy team) and some very bright green(ally team) look very similar to each other. it happened several times that i thought, oh COOL i get massive gunshit support and then, OUT OF NOWHERE!!! they finished me off. what to do about this? give one team only bright colours to mid range, in mid range make it colourfull between red/yello team and green/blue team, then go further into dark coulour region of units. team 1----------------team 1 || team 2-----------------team 2 dark--------------red/yellow || green/blue-------------bright

We ran out of colours really fast, sadly. In fact in big 10v10's you can see the colours start recycling. I'll have another look at the colour list and see what I can do.

I confirm what [Pirate]mojjj said. While most colors are very different between teams, there is this one shade that is very similar. It is pale beige vs very pale green if it tells you anything. Give me some time, I may come with a screenshot.

The screenshots (beware 1920x1080): While on player list you can easily tell the two colors apart, on live units it becomes much harder. Have a fun guessing from the screenshots.

To fix this, colours are fixed: Allies are cold colours (blue, green) enemies are warm colours (red, yellow). We're all aware of WHY teamcolors are done this way, but why not via autohost? For example, in SPADS (the BA autohost) colors are assigned just after !balance and just before !start. That code could be reapplied in Springie, but also with teamcentric colors. For example: Someone types !start command Springie does a final !balance Springie assigns correct teamcolors Springie starts game. This does several things: it removes a widget and allows all players to see the same teamcolors. Why can't it be implemented this way?

Basically because Licho wants you to always be teal, allies to be cool colours, enemies to be light colours. I agree that this other way is better, and maybe even allows the possibility of custom/reserved colours as some high level unlock/kudos thing. Might even be able to convince him if I put it that way. Anywhere here are the new enemy colours: The light yellow is yellower, and there are 16 now instead of 8 (so it doesn't repeat). If anyone thinks anything clashes or a colour should be moved closer to the top (I.E colours 5-8 are rare, and 9-16 are 'almost never') say so now (maybe 1-4 should include more greys/browns and not just be red-orange-yellow?). 2-3 seem to clash, but they are colours from the previous version only a couple shades FURTHER from eachother... Colours 8-16 clash somewhat (esp the dark reds/purples, 13-16) with earlier colours but it's better than repeating, so...

Yellow might be a bit too bright. How about changing 4 -> 2, 2 -> 7, 7 -> 4 to push yellow up the list and fit 3 solid colours in the first 3.

Yellow is the same one we had before. I found the reds were always a bit close though. The new colour in the lower numbers is the 'dark orange'. I got up to 10 on the ally colours before giving up.

color number 9 of enemy and ally palette are the ones too close. its more important to distinguish between enemy and ally than between enemy and enemy. focus! and i dont understand you last post/image. i assume you expressed confusion, but you might correct me here.

Colours number 9 are fairly significantly different from the current ones in the stable version. The last image is, obviously, all the ally/enemy colours in one pallette, for comparison.

>I agree that this other way is better So does everyone else who has ever played this game. I agree that "design by committee" is a bad idea for the most part, but it's been a year and most people still don't like it. I feel like anytime a majority of people think something is a bad thing, it's too easy for someone to hide behind "design by committee is bad." and do whatever the hell they want. I like the color schemes with cool allies vs warm opponents, but having colors assigned locally is extremely confusing and isn't value add.

Is there a way to change local colors? cause i hate teal... thats the only reason I ever lose.

Antelope: In my opinion, its less confusing then players picking black or white.

I'll work on inventing new colors, starting with a color darker than black.
