We've made a cinematic trailer for Zero-K, narrating some of the backstory of the game.
Check it out here:
Be sure to watch in HD!

Wow, wow wow! Very nice... very good quality and very nice idea. I really like it. :)
The only thing I would change is the type of armies fighting against each other. One scene is with light vehicles.. every army looks mirrored from the other team. e.g.: Second scene with exactly same heavy tanks on each side!?
ZK has a lot of different units, why not to put those fighting scenes with different factories?

yea that was awsome

the only complaint is that the battles a bit unnatural and black and white, theres no intermixing of the units, and not that much mess and none of the units are crossing the invisible line. it may put some people off because its not dynamic enough.

Agree, that how i think to show some real gameplay inside it can be good.

This is really good. Best ZK movie yet I think.

EDIT: Could we get this posted on the front page, either alongside or instead of the current trailer?

EDIT2: Also, what's the map at 1:06?:

First of all that was awesome

Secondly… it also game me an idea … would it be possible (from a technical perspective) to use the “classical” approach for making battle scenes?

What I mean is instead of one person doing all the work could one “director” coordinate several “opposing” players to “act” the scenes (via mumble for example) so you have both epic scale and dynamic combat since the units would be controlled real-time instead of being scripted, once the desired scenes are achieved a “cameraman” with a powerful computer could run it on maximum settings to record the raw video used for the final editing stage

it may sound complicated but I believe this could greatly reduce individual workload in creating new videos … if a team comes together whose members can easily communicate and coordinate with each other…

@The_Yak, looks like one of the many lava maps. There's plenty, just gotta browse the map list for a bit.

Although I really like this trailer I prefer the current front page video, so please don't replace it. The "MEDIA" tab on the zk page could include a "MOVIES" or "VIDEOS" section though!

interesting. It says that "only our children remain", which was the plot of Total Annihilation - humans had long ago died out, but their machine creations continued to fight. ZeroK however has human factions.... in planetwars atleast.

quote:
ZeroK however has human factions.... in planetwars atleast.

“and yet all factions use the exact same units, buildings and weapons… only the names of the commanders differ between factions and sometimes even these change sides for no apparent reason, “

“and the war… it never truly ends, it has been won many times, yet it always starts again, it has been going on for so long that planetary mining is no longer possible, metal must be scavenged from battles to build the larger infrastructure projects… on even the greenest planets the seas are empty and the forests bare except for the marching warmachines and the occasional chicken brood, perhaps the last organic species with any semblance of sentience …”

“still… the number of planets seems small for the scale of a galaxy, and the battlefields strangely restricted… perhaps humanity is still there, just outside the range of our senses and we are all but prisoners or playthings or a corrupted, recurring memory …”

“Why is the sky featureless and empty?... why is the edge of each battlefield a depthless abiss … how can the planets remain unchanged no matter how many and how large the conflicts that visit them are? ….what force restores them?...”

Very nice, very well done.

I'll offer some criticism and suggestions later when I have more time.

It was very good, except that the battles (except the one with the scorpian) looked too static, and several had the same units per side. They met excactly at the line, which seems artificial.

Excellent trailer; I think it really nailed the mood perfectly.

(Kind of a shame though that spring shadows really suck :'<)

Technically quite flawless. (good quality, high settings, no bugs or uglyness like clipping)
Could put ShadowMapSize = 4096, helps a bit with the jittering edges.

Some shots are nice (the wreckage) but imo feels like they should always cut 1 or 2 seconds earlier.

The shown gameplay is too static and clearly faked though and that weights down the whole thing for me.
Not a fan of the story subtitles, seems too much like generic scifi told by disconnected sentences, but maybe matter of taste.
So very good "looks" but "screenplay" could be better.

Ya using replays of actual battles is IMO the route to take, and a few more dynamic shots (you have that one of spinning around the Zenith, which is TOO fast).

Still love it though.

The OTA fiction was clones vs human uploads. The whole war is about whether humans shall continue in their bodies, or in machine bodies: The war over the transfer of consciousness from flesh to machines.

The Zero-K fiction is the about the abandoned children of a dead civilization who were careless with their creations and made them as slaves for war and industry. It's about finding their place in the galaxy without the guidance of their creators, and the singleplayer campaign will focus on the last human revived from stasis as she discovers what happened to all the humans and what the robots now fight for, and ultimately decides the fate of this new robot civilization.

PlanetWars serves as a prequel to the main Zero-K plotline. These were the massive wars that the robots were built for, that lead to the extinction of humankind. We've been way too lax about keeping the fiction updated between PW rounds. Cybernetic Front should have wiped out and infiltrated the fiction of almost every faction with their ridiculous wins during the Valhalla era, and LH would have been wiped out last round if it had concluded with anything but a stalemate (This is the reason Unaligned are no longer a faction). If this round ended right now, Empire would get wiped from the fiction too (Possibly rolled into Free Machines as 'The Machine Empire' or something).
