Here is a page with the recent PW implementation idea:
https://github.com/ZeroK-RTS/Zero-K/wiki/Matchmaking-PW

It is a 2v2 balance-free system which will appeal to less people but looks like it should at least work. Feedback requested. Viability, fun, possible exploits/problems in the mechanics etc...

This will require redevelopment of the web ui correct? Who will take this responsibility?

quote:
there will be a web based UI displaying the planets which are able to be attacked. Any player from the active faction can choose a planet to attack. Other players of that faction will then be notified that someone wants to attack a planet and have the option to join. The first player to join the attack completes the attacking team (because the games are 2v2).

The biggest problem I had with previous planetwars was the same planets at a few key locations getting fought for over and over again, resulting in much more repetitive and monotonous gameplay then normal zk matches. This system doesn't seem to address that.

What is the intended benefit of anonymous attackers and defenders? Would that anonymity also apply in game?

Gui will be hybrid. I will take care of that.
You will attack planet on web, but in lobby, "vote" bar will appear for people to join that attack (or defense, once challenge starts).

Planet repeated attacks can still be an issue, but planets now cycle maps.

Anonymity is to prevent people from backing off when seeing who is attacker/defender.
It's extent will be based on feedback.
It can be one of these three levels:

- challenge (attackers don't see defenders and vice versa until game starts)

- challenge + in game (they also don't see each other's names in battle, but names are visible in replay page)

- challenge + in game + after battle (after battle, only victory side names are published. Lost time is never public (except for admins))

Extended anonymity grants freedom from blame for losing games.

In the case of full anonymity can identities still be determined by moderators?

In that case challenge+ingame sounds best to me.

Overall sounds like a good plan. If I still had my computer I'd pump out some 2vs2 map sets for this project. In any case I think there's enough small maps to make this work.

While i do like the idea of reanimating the PW, i would rather see the devs focusing on preparing the game for steam release.

Streamline the GUI, hide 95% of the options into an "advanced" menu, make some sort of centralised options menu that could allow the players to manipulate the engine settings as well as the widgets. Make the ZK launcher not look so fucking ugly. Get a "starter pack" which would contain everything necessary for an easy ZK set up, preferably sized around 500-900 Mb. Get more sandbox scenarios for nabs to practice against AI.

Maybe set up a legal entity and get a proper cash shop instead of the ugly kudos system. I wonder how many assets ZK uses for "non-commercial use only", and if theres a way to legally make the cash shop work. The funds could be spent on purchasing decent sound or 3d assets, there are quite a few units that are begging for a better model.

There's so much to do and yet instead we get a new PW which has a fair chance to fall flat on its face just because there are too few people playing. Its kinda like making widgets for FFAs when nobody ever plays FFAs (hello KoTH, hello unit trading, hello ceasefire and restricted areas).

I have moved the legal stuff discussion to another thread so we dont derail this one

Problem is steam is stalled on "legal entity", waiting for saktoth AU options investigation.

I too would rather see polish than yet another PW iteration, unless people just flat out prefer developing new things like this. This ain't just about Greenlight - there's many places to seriously advertise ZK on.

Anyway, to stay on topic and perhaps give more productive feedback: I'd like to see who I'm playing with and against. If this turns out to be creating problems then the system can still be anonymized.

a reason that units usually have simplefied models is a Spring resources thing. hi-poly models slow down the game, so if someone were to make a lot of them they could make the game grind to a halt faster that it already does.

I too would like to see PW revived, as it sounds interesting and gives a long-term goal to the game(instead of single skirmishes there's actually gains and losses. at the moment though it seems many are heavily against it, from what I gathered 2 main reasons:
1.)they really want it to be ready for steam
2.)the old one had problems, therefore a lack of interest in making a new one

edit: reading the page, the idea of getting closer to controlling the planet reminds me of SWBFII where you had to destroy the space craft first before beginning ground assault, if the planet had a fleet on it
