Editing with
http://www.virtualdub.org/I like it because only needs one program and fast.
[Spoiler]
1) Drag video file into Virtualdub
2) In timeline at bottom set start & end frames with the buttons.
3) Menu: Video - Filter - Add... Resize Filter.
4) In the Filters list: Selected the just added "Resize" and click Cropping.
Drag & Drap frame of video to select what region to keep.
5) Menu: Video - Framerate
Change framerate to adjust playback speed.
Use "Decimate by X" to only use every x-th frame.
(gif does not need so many FPS = filesize)
6) File - Export - Animated gif
Recording:
Almost any PC can record small window at 0.1 gamespeed, which is enough when you resize/crop to gif dimensions anyway.
a) spring's recorder, in chat:
/createvideo
Use whatever the uncompressed format is named (least hassle and only need short recordings anyway)
b) Fraps
Super easy to use. either google for the last freeware version or not.
Or use Trialversion, the watermark gets cropped anyway.
And yes, instead of gif use the .webm that modern sites will offer you on upload.
