Hi guys

Currently playing Crusader Kings II GoT Mod, Istrolid & Dwarf Fortress. Starting to feel a little stale, and I dont know anything about the current strategy games scene.

Based on these suggestions, can anyone suggest a new game or two for me to check out? I like my games to have strategy, or at least a lot of variables to figure out so I dont get bored. Big AAA commercial releases eg. the newer total war games tend to bore me shitless.

More paradox games: EU4, HOI4, Stellaris. Note that EU4 and especially Stellaris are relatively simple, although HOI4 isn't terribly complex either, it still takes 10+h to get the basics down.

Wargame: Red Dragon is really an amazing RTS.
Played HOI4 in coop, it's lots of fun. It requires a massive investment in time though!

forged alliance forever

After consulting some Zero-K chat channel denizens, I have been under the impression that Forged Alliance Forever is inferior to the game.

theres a new steam game thats quite popular atm called rim job, its similar to dwarf fortress but with better gfx

another one called FACTORIO is also popular, its a weird game where you sort of design an automated system like a factory floor, and try to make the most efficient process that evolves and eventually leads to firing missiles or something

personally im just playing overwatch

I can't process your post semantically.

"The game" refers to the aforementioned Zero-K.

Zero-k was not mentioned as an entity, but it was used as a descriptor for the denizens of a chat channel.
What "the game" referred to was unclear.

Sorry.

I wanted to avoid repetition.

I'm glad we sorted this out.

I thought you were making a joke that the lobby program is worse than the game (the lobby is called Forged Alliance Forever, the game is supreme commander:forged alliance).

I would recommend rimworld, is good vanilla and has a good selection of mods.

Stellaris has lots of interesting strategic elements but ship combat and design is dull, Stardrive 2 + Zero sector is probably worth giving a go.

Warzone2100 is a free download as well.

Factorio seemed kinda pointless.

Gotta put some support behind factorio.

You're stranded on a planet and need to escape. It's like resource management meets crafting game meets tower defense, with zero grind. You build a factory and have to defend it from aliens. Combat's pretty secondary though. You need to build a factory so big and advanced you can use it to build a space shuttle.

Very addictive. Very well paced too. It never feels like you're just waiting (except maybe at the very start while you're manually gathering the resources to start you fac, but that's a few minutes at most).

Rise of Nations:
It's AoE2 meets civ. I can't believe I only heard of this game recently since it was released 2004.I prefer it to both the predecessors because it really feels like they improved on both formulas by hybridising them. Emphasises economy and teching, and while it's possible to be aggressive early, it's not standard afaik.

Duelyst:
Hearthstone meets heroes of might and magic? FtP CCG. Strange discrepancy between the gameplay graphics and the marketing though. The game is good regardless. Classic mage duel game.

Overwatch:
Seems good. Expensive... I probably didn't get my money's worth out of it before it lost its sparkle. It is fun when you're playing with friends and coordinating etc., but I wouldn't jump online and play with randoms. Teams always had really poor compositions and I ended up having to play healer/tank almost every game or otherwise feel frustration as the team crumbles.

Grey Goo:
Oh man so overhyped. Bad RTS. Units all look the same and the counter system has no rhyme nor reason. Feels like the dev team only had half an idea of what makes a good game.

Company of Heroes 2:
I haven't played it yet, but it looks pretty good. Very tactical game with emphasis on unit retention. I'm probably going to pick it up when next it's on sale. Not that I have time to play games these days...

Yo, wargame red dragon. I play it and it's a blast. Steep learning curve, but if you play with other noobs nothing beats the epic tank battles n shit.

The late game becomes an utter grindfest though from experience. Units created instantly? Stalemate generator. Not to mention not a huge fan of hard counters. :|

Kinda going the way of FTP. In-game real money shop + commanders being locked, paying for the full game doesn't give you full content, have to grind out bulletins and stuff. It feels like too many things have very hard counters. Not much 'fun' factor in it, too competitive for my tastes. (ZK has a good fun factor as there are plenty of tools available and a lot more freedom than just doing things in a build order.)

I personally find it enjoyable when I have a nice decent size environment to manipulate and lots of tools to play with. I really enjoy the feeling of freedom of creativity instead of being bound to specific builds. Automation puzzles are fun as well!

Re: Rise of Nations
It's a grind lategame? Yeah I guess? There's also the one where all caps are instantaneous etc., as well as wonder victories. I haven't actually played online, I only got it the other day and putted around against the computer. It seems like at higher levels you've got all the tools you need to close out games, but ofc I could be mistaken.

Re: Company of Heroes 2
Buh gross. I can see unlocks being useful for teaching purposes (limiting the noise), but when it's "pay to circumvent" they usually make it epic grindy to encourage you to pay. Just like CCGs... T-T
