It seemed to me that the large group of minotaurs would have been able to break the big shieldball of the north team that was moving around in the middle.

Yup, if that minotaur ball committed to the attack, the game would end much sooner. It would not kill the shieldball, probably - with lobsters, I would be able to kite it - but I would not be able to stop it.
I was just trying to chip away at the ball and scare it away (which worked until berthas and until the eco and army difference between our teams became way too high).
