the commander did not give the order to open fire but the glaves began to break ranks revealing our position as they fired indiscriminately towards the enemy's harassing skirmishers.. some of the men who had just arrived had no combat experience at all and were clearly terrified as they huddled in balled up masses.. the commander moved with purpose behind a hastily constructed fortification as we watched in support of a radar towers construction.. those of us who had been here a while knew what was coming..
the earth shook as it betrays the distant Bertha bombardment.. sending stones dancing across the floors bellow a crimson torn sky .. then the silent stare of faces some we will never see again.. as we waited for the shells to fall.
to our relief the first impacts hit an allied shield to the west but this is where my luck runs out.. i was given the order to collect the dead while the enemy was distracted.. our forward cloak field generator had been active for a while now but the enemy had constructed a Lucifer in range of the field.. 8 of us were sent in to reclaim at first the wrecks and then each-other and so far i was still alive..
but as the grizzly wreck finally broke apart i lost my cover.. those few seconds felt like the longest moments of my life.. the Lucifer prism began to glow and i knew i was going to die.. i looked down at the oil pooling around the melted corpses of my dead friends.. in the reflection i could see two tactical short ranged nukes streaking overhead across the sky.. a terrific flash and blast-wave showered my torso with burning fragments and shortly after i cloaked.. why?.. why had i been allowed to live?
there i waited in the open field for the order to retreat..the realization began to dawn on me that i was forgotten.. i was almost relieved when a stray shell damaged the nearby cloaking tower so i could take to repairing it.. just as i dared to begin to believe i might make it a swarm of flea drones erupted over the brim of the hill .. desperate to finish my task i ignored the pain.. repairing the cloak tower until darkness finally took me.
