Following Evolution RTS' massive success with getting on Steam, and with a donation from Connetable enabling this, Zero-K is also now on Greenlight.

We need your upvotes!

I will use this thread to post all the little things/problems I can think of. Most are probably based off things I noticed from trying to help out Evo newbies yesterday:

1) Players want to get into the game. They want to press a button and start playing. Might want to somehow highlight the Singleplayer and Multiplayer tabs in ZKL.

2) Greenlight will flood Zero-K with people completely unable to do anything without guidance. Someone HAS TO make sure that ZK will be released on a day where as many willing veterans as possible are available to help everyone. I suggest a Friday or holidays.

3) There's so many more things that will definitely go wrong, ohmigod I don't even want to think of them.

Reactivating the much hated juggler just might be a winning move.

Can we pack zero-K with a modified springSP? It's so much easier to understand than a lobby to newbies, and it support missions, we can put a tutorial with it.
springSP source code: springfiles.com/spring/spring-base/springsp-v09-source-code

I'd say more admins need to be recruited. I think if someone has a question he will most probably listen to a "police officer guy".

Evo had 0 admins to start with :)

I'd say ZK admin team is pretty large. I mean, people like drone would complain that we're practically a police state where every third user is police.

The lobby could use some improvements, guidelines, popups which tell what's what and maybe highlight on 1v1/newbies room/small teams/coop vs ai for new players

It is fairly large but it can sometimes be hard to get hold of another admin to validate an action. This sometimes leads to cases taking a long time to be resolved or being missed. I think that we have enough admins to deal with a sudden flood of a few hundred players like evo got, and if we don't it would be possible to recruit more.

Redesigning it to be much less hated would be even better.

The problems with evo people that evo suffered were not due to moral singularities, but with simple stuff that shouldn't require validation.

@brofessional, please explain more detailed.

feel free to implement it, or create guidelines how to implement it (text or visual sketchup,...)

Unfortunately i don't have skills required to do such thing. But it would be simple, when the lobby is launched for the first time a series of popups appears which are explaining what every button, combo box, tabs etc. do. The first popup would be a welcome message and something like "please spend 2 minutes on completing this short lobby tutorial" and then you skip the message by left-clicking it and a next one appears, explaining that Home tab is basically the site, singleplayer lets you play single player missions just by selecting a mission and pressing the button, multiplayer tab lets you join multiplayer lobbies, blah blah please consider joining newbies/coop vs ai as a newbie and so on.

I was thinking of the trolls invading from the far north of Steamland. For fixing stuff that needs admin privileges we will have enough admins.

A 2-minute tutorial for a lobby is a terrible way to inform the user. If the lobby is unclear, the UI needs to improve until it's clear. At most a quick easy-to-dismiss infobox when you click each tab the first time would be good.

But still, there's a lot of UI improvements the lobby could get - personally I can't stand the way that messages from the ZK bots work, and the battle-room is navigationally just another chat. And obviously the first launch single-player-experience needs tlc - the whole "create an account, now here's mission 1" experience.

The problem is a simple lack of man-hours available to work on it. I could take a crack at lobby improvements, but I'm prettymuch swamped with RL crap right now.
