So i got ~1680 elo, player 2 is a newbie with 1500 elo, player 3 got ~1550 elo and player 4 ~1750 elo. Guess how this is balanced?

Team 1:
Me 1680 elo
player 2 1500 elo (a newbie with <5h xp)

Team 2:
Player 3 1550 elo
Player 4 1750 elo

Both players in team 2 are better than team 1...player 3 beats player 2 and player 4 beats me in elo. Yet it still balances this way. This is no balance this is more like best vs worst.

A thing like this happened to me too. Me (1775 elo) and a newbie (1300 elo) versus a 1500 elo and a 1800+ elo player.

It was this battle: (we added a bot to even the balance) http://zero-k.info/Battles/Detail/31125

Are you sure you balanced the game before starting?

On a tangent:

Me (1450 or so) + Blaise (around the same) vs 1900, 1350, 1450.

I'm sure we balanced too. We wondered about the balance.

Oh and Shazzeh, that game of yours was planetwars and all three of your opponents were in the same faction, so there's nothing that special about the balance. But Rick and I are talking about normal games.

Springie is using a different elo than actual player elo for !balance.

Players with only a few games played are counted as "low reliable players". Reliability increases with games played to a value somewhere around 6 as far as I know.
Every point of reliability below 6 is multiplied with -50 when using the !balance command.

I can not find and provide further information, but you're free to look it up yourself. I suppose it's somewhere here:

Yes Skasi, I know that low reliability is translated to minus elo. This is currently visible in every (new) player's profile, as players start with 1250 elo instead of 1500 because of this.

This wansn't the cause of the balance weirdness.

@skasi
if thats true then his elo may have been even lower than 1500 making the balance even worse.

Rick, are you sure that 1) your newbie had a lower reliability than his? 2) elo was up to date? The lobby only updates other players elo ever so often.

Antero, I might be wrong but think profile elo display is different to mouse-over display. Also Licho said something about PW and regular Springie using different !balance systems a few weeks ago. No idea whether that's out of date or still true.

I'm 100% positive that, after all modifiers, the elo values were like I described. The only player with lower reliability than normal was my newbie ally. This game we played was one of his first.

Skasi, I think that sounds like a plausible explanation - that regular springie is still using the old balance system, in which low reliability players are given less attention when balancing, which results in complete newbies being ignored in the balance. So springie would see my team's elo as 1775 (only my elo), even though it is around 1500 (average of my elo and the newbie's elo).
