Is this supposed behaviour? Wouldn't it make more sense to always draw at least maxParticles amount of particles?

Reproduce by watching any big teams game with low particle limit(10'000) and see how suddenly all particles disappear after some time. Or just spawn some particles and vary particle limit to see them disappear.

For me not seeing particles is a big handicap because it makes missiles nearly invisible.

No (because "at least X" would be "min" not "max").

Spring handles only basic sprite particles. More advanced things like ribbons, distortions and such are handled by LUPS.

Actually it is engine related, particle counting was changed lately, so defaults should be much (much) higher.

Yes, well lups is not part of the engine, but maybe it should be. It's an external pack.
