Can you make box formations with your armies?

Is there a keybind for it or something? I saw a video from about 7 years ago saying you could make box formations with ALT but it seems outdated now, any ideas?

Ya I had the same question about that a few months ago, but I only found out about circle guard, nothing about box formations.

In case you wanted to take a look at it, here's the link:

I don't know if there is a keymod for box formation, but if you hold CTRL, units will keep their current position and move at the same speed.

You could use line formation (hold RMB and draw) to get the formation you want, then CTRL+COMMAND (like attack move to a single point) and the units will hold the previously defined "formation".

I know you can use CTRL to keep formation but i cant make a perfect box formation, it looks really off and not right, just very messy. Means that bigger armies look clunky and ugly

this is something I want in zerok. formations like in other strategy games. instead of just a blob and linemove, it would be nice if units could get in different formations (lines, boxes), had a settings for how spread out or tight they should be and had a preference for where in the formation the specific unit type should be (riots/raiders front, skirmishers middle, artillery back).

Yes I agree, I think it would be cool to see custom formations walking around, and being able to make custom formations.

Circle guard is really cool and useful, but its not quite the same.

You can express arbitrary formations in terms of circle guard; making a widget to rapidly apply the ones you like most would be a fairly low-level task.

I've been thinking about making a density setting for armies. Would this do what you need?
If so, I might give it a shot around new years once I'm free.

density would be one of the things, if it means what I think it does. which would be a setting of a minimum distance between units that they will respect and try to space themselves out if they're too close.
on another note, one of the things I find REALLY annoying is how units will often push each other. it can be dangerous and probably could also be exploited to use faster units to push slow units at the same speed.

Pushing is a thing. I played around with having 5 or 6 halberds surround a claymore super tightly and push it around also acting as a shield for it with mixed results. Claymore is pretty slow and not that tanky so the halberds somewhat fix that, but I probably isn't worth the micro or cost most of the time.

A way to save/load formations would be nice. So when center/main guarded unit die you do not have to remake all units distances and orientations (the formation) again. Good to replace when others units die too.
