Video promotion idea - Zero-K Vs BAR

Just a thought, would anyone that makes Youtube videos about ZK be interested in making something like this:

---

Real Time Strategy Game Showdown!
Zero-K Vs BAR
Who is the King of Free OSS RTS?

---

The video could be a brief mention of the TA and Spring history, followed by audio interviews with a developer from each project. Each developer could talk about the philosophy, features and implementation of the respective game (eg. ZK = flat tech tree, terraforming). The audio would be supported by footage showing off various features and closeups of various units in action.

If there wasn't someone within ZK available to do this video, could someone from the two projects approach a suitable Youtuber about doing the same, or maybe even someone from BAR?

BAR is fairly friendly to ZK on its website (see the ZK FAQ), so both projects would probably come off looking good in their respective areas of strength. The video could also honorably mention other Spring projects therefore being a win-win for Spring games generally.

could be fun. Although I wouldn't pitch it as trying to come to the conclusion about who the king is. And how would one reach a conclusion on that anyway

Agreed, FOSS TA-likes should work together.

I was thinking the "showdown" thing as just a gimmick for the title, and would think the conclusion would be along the lines of "both games are equally awesome, but ZK is the best for tactical depth and dynamic play and BAR best for TA-authenticity and beautiful audiovisual".

Yeah sounds great. Why dont you do it yourself? Its less of a deal than you probably think it is.

Here is a free and impressively functional video-editor:

Here is a free recording-program:

I needed around 4 hours to find out how to work with those. Have fun.

Maybe something like a response to Winter's video where he says, "apparently a mod called Zero-K", saying "Hey we are a full fledged game, and here is what we have to offer that makes us different than BAR".

do I want to see that clip or will it make me too sad?

Something I think would be interesting would be taking two players(not devs, maybe streamers/youtubers/etc.) and having them compare their experiences with both. It'd be even better if they'd tried, even only shallowly, the other game. Like a C&C discussion.

I don't know any BAR players though enough to ask :D

Huh? The game is free, why do we have waaay more people watching via a streaming platform, compared with playing? Did I miss something?

I've been asking around on the BAR side of things and having no luck. I think it needs to either come from GF or a senior dev here, or from someone with actual video experience and credibility (ie. runs a YT channel). Hopefully the idea is good, just not sure how far I'm going to get with it myself.

I do think the incredible Replaycam widget is a way which could make gathering footage for this kind of thing far easier.

It sounds like the kind of thing you would have to lead. You have the vision so would be the best one to answer all the questions as they arise.

There was a Taiwanese streamer who had about 3,500 people watching a ZK twitch stream last night! It was great. An army of first-timers in a 16x16 match.

Has anyone tried using it with BAR (I don't even know if BAR allows local widgets TBH)? It probably needs some tweaking of constants, and some things like the Silo and capture logic are likely useless, but most of it is quite generic.

A simple thing you could do is a side by side video of a battle on the same map, same player count, roughly similar skill. I'd be really interested to see how the game evolved differently.

Just had a look, he still streams. He has like 500k Twitch subscribers.
16v16 pure Taiwanese players lobby, all of them grey or red rank lol :D

Poor guy built a detriment, went with him into a territory held by mono-lance, a bb he tried to build before got obliterated by two bb's hitting it, and meanwhile his team's base got nuked twice... Hopefully he sticks around

Update: His detriment obviously died soon after, when I stopped watching he was attemtping to build a SL without enough energy while the front was slowly collapsing under waves of blobs of shieldballs.

Wintergaming tried ZK on stream, for a quickly lost game vs Hard AI :

One weird thing I just noticed is how Twitch doesn't count «partial» (?) streams ??

and yet, despite his viewership being generally in the 0.5k-1k range :

he just played a quick match without knowing what he was doing. someones need to tell him all the unique side of zero-k (terraforming, commander lvl up, physic based units, etc...)
else he will just play it like a cheap BAR clone without much thought about it.

I have linked Zero-K videos already 2 times in his Discord, last time even a selection of ZK tutorials by AUrankAdminGoogleFrog and CArankAdminShadowfury333 ... :(
