During this match: http://zero-k.info/Battles/Detail/1843810

I was attacking massed Levellers with roughly equivalent numbers of Ravagers - and losing.

It looks like in large numbers, Levellers beat equivalent cost in Ravagers?

This is not what I expected, I generally expect a normal assault to be good against a normal riot.

In rover mirror match, rippers are always the conter for ravagers
ravagers are always moved in balls and the ripper aoe attack makes them lethal. 3 or 4 of them can tear through ravagers without them getting close.

Riots are the generally good vs assault. Especially ripper
Your army attacked his and so the rippers were already facing your army. This meant that you walked into his shots and died before you got a chance to attack. This is what makes the ripper good at defending

ravager do beat levelers 1v1.. but..

levelrs have:

aoe: this multiplies the power of levelers sometimes as much or more then 4 fold
solution: = spread units.. not easy for the next reason

concentration fire: concentration fire is a very strong mechanic.. eg. 10v10.. one side is random the other concentrates all units on killing each unit in series.. because it takes 10 shots to kill each unit after just the first shot the side thats firing random has already lost 1 unit and there damage output is reduced by 1/10.
solution: also employ concentration fire.. not wise if you have short range and the enemy has aoe as your units may clump

high alpha burst: slow reload but fast high damage projectile can diminish enemy numbers before the combat losses can average out..
ie. 4v4.. levelers fire instantly now its 2v4 and the true battle begins
solution: send scouts in a steady stream ahead of the attacking force to draw the inital burst.. difficult to time this correctly

defenders advantage: can shoot before normal in anticipation of intercepting the incoming unit with the projectile
solution: cloaking

true solution: imho levelers are glass cannons.. you must harass them with long ranged units to bait them into a doomed assault vs your ravagers as the ravagers in a spread formation wont suffer aoe or defenders advantage.. if your spamming scouts you can waste there alpha and it should still be a win even without concentration fire. to this end i advise badgers to force the enemy to become enraged

I don`t know why this is not reflected in it`s unit-description, but Ravagers are exactly NOT normal assaults, but assault-raiders, which is also why they are that fast.
From that angle it makes sense that they are somewhat underwhelming when fighting riots.

Ravager as a raider-assault makes more sense, and yeah that should be in the unit description.

I've noticed they ARE pretty good against Maces and other non-AOE riots, but that makes sense given AUrankSmokeDragon's post.
