Units, buildings and wreckage don't render

Hello. I used to play ZK in both Win and Linux versions on this PC but i can't get either one to run properly now after freshly installing both my OS. The Windows version runs, but unit models and wreckage are not rendered at all in most circumstances.

Basically most units are invisible, however sometimes pieces of certain buildings show, such as the floor plate of a factory. Oddly, buildings that are scouted but under fog of war seem to display correctly (transparently). Weapon effects, shields and pieces of unit debris from explosions render normally, power grid lines render as well.

I have tried playing around with icon distance and unit render distance, to no effect. I've noticed some odd behaviour here as well such as the game resetting icon distance to 0 after restart, which may be a response to the underlying problem? Also tried compatibility settings & lower resolutions.

Infolog.txt says there are a couple of shader compile errors which i think are the culprit. I have no idea why this happens. The most common error seems to be "ERROR: 1:211: error(#247) Function return does not match type" but there also seem to be some unsupported extensions such as "WARNING: 0:11: warning(#62) enable/warn/disable extension is not found. Extension "GL_ARB_conservative_depth" is not supported". None of that makes a lot of sense to me.

There was a hardware change (new used graphics card because the old one died) at some point last year before i reinstalled my Windows, im not sure if zk ever actually ran with the new card/old windows configuration. Maybe the card is to blame?

Help please, i love Zk and have a bad itch to play :(

btw the version i downloaded from itch.io ended up self-installing into my download folder (no subfolder) without asking any questions.

i see you have AMD hacks enabled. have you tried turning it off?

can someone with AMD hardware say something about drivers?

also, Windows 8.1 seriously? i strongly recommend to use Linux on your old machine for security reasons.

try setting on minimal and see if there is improvement.

I tried both using minimal settings with or without ATI hacks, no difference.

Driver is latest Catalyst version for Win 8.1, which is at this point 10 years old. I used a slightly older version before, which had the same problem.

I actually got it to run in Linux using Mono, and units are visible here. However the performance is bad and it crashes basically every second game, so thats not really an option. Since Mono is running the .exe, i guess this shows that the problem is specific to my Windows environment and/or driver setup.

Last year, before i reinstalled Linux, i played the Linux version of ZK and it worked ok-ish. Pretty sure it wasnt the Mono version, however i cant get the legacy version to run anymore. Not sure what changed.

Unsure what to do at this point. AI has told me that some older ATI drivers have problems compiling some shaders (basically dont like implicit type conversions from what i understand) but didn't offer any solutions. Maybe someone has knowledge about this particular topic?

Ive been using it for more than 10 years now, never had any problems with security. I like it because it isn't Windows 10 or 11. I have a dual boot setup with Linux Mint but im not thrilled, cant get most games to run or just glitchy af so im back to using Windows for gaming for the most part.
