1/ It's terrific;
2/ Install was a breeze;
3/ It's deeply confusing - even for someone who played TA. This doesn't seem to me to have any easy fix due to the inherent complexity;
4/ A printable master key list somewhere prominent would have been useful;
5/ I've waited quite a while for a 1v1 game. I suspect many new players might not have this patience. Jump in and play us noobs!
6/ I watched a couple of youtube replays. These were a good intro to the strategic aspect;
7/ Matchmaking could really do with a sort-out. In particular given the depth of the modability it seems bizarre that you can't sort out passworded / full games or sort by game version by a checkbox;

Thanks to those who have spent time answering my daft questions over the past few days.

Welcome on board.

5th point from the list is the most concerning one: people tend to avoid duels for unknown reason. Maybe just a lack of critical mass of players.

3.) What complexity are you exactly talking about? Didn't tutorials help understanding the complex features like overdrive and energy grid?
4.) Printing out /LuaUI/Configs/zk_keys.lua might be the next best thing.
5.) Is there anything that made you not want to spectate/play team games?
7.) You CAN sort out full games (though why would you want to, spectating can be as fun and instructive as playing) or non-Zero-K games.

1. Thats rather undescriptive point.
3. Uh, what exacly is confusing? Every RTS you start to play without any knowlage of is a bit confusing because you dont know units, combos, counters or even economy etc.
5. 1v1 games are not somthing that is that often played. Its even lessl likely to get someone to play with you 1v1 if you sit in your private room like you did. I also suggest stating in the ZK chanell if you want to play 1v1.
7. Matchmaking is the making as far as a I am aware. And yeah its seems weird that ZKL has no option to sort off passworded games. Why dont we have that?

Question: are you still going to play it?

Edit: Dammit you two above me! I was meant to answer first :F

Duels can be scary as you don't have a team behind you that can soften your mistakes if you fuck up. Plus, due to the low player count, a newbie is more likely to end up in an uneven match against an experienced player. (What if in "1vs1 newbie rooms", the server could automatically add AI's to one of the teams to compensate for the less strong player?)

That's interesting. There has been a lot of discussion about installation being difficult and buggy. What OS are you using?

The basic concepts (unit classes, eco etc) are easy to pick up but mastering the game is difficult. Cloakies are probably the best factory to get into first because they are extremely powerful and versatile but also easy to use. LVs are similar but only work well on flat maps.

Most people don't like 1v1s for some reason and prefer to play 50v50 on ugly maps at 2fps.

PLrankOrfelius Terrific means great, not terrible...

We don't have a lot of 1v1-minded players yet, would be nice to get some more.
The Achron community is all 1v1, save for some 2v2 and Star games.

The small community makes it hard to find people of your skill level to duel. often matches can go really lopsided in the 1v1 room for quite a while. When I see s new person in the 1v1 room, I think, "Oh, hey, an new person! that's great!" but I don't want to play a match against him/her because it will become one of 2 things: I will win in 2 minuets or delaying the game will just give me detriments and no possible chance of loosing(100m/s beats 10m/s). I'm also not good at all giving tutorials.

All in all, I can't see a use of playing a new player because I can't teach him/her, only nubtron can.

Most of the players don't like 1v1s clickfests, and cant afford new mouse each game they start. They prefer more relaxing 10vs10s where u can have mates to support you adn take care of things u forgot (or dont have time to care).

The relative difficulty or ease of finding a 1v1 opponent depends a lot on the time of day. 1v1 games are quite common during evening hours in Europe, but may be uncommon during some other hours.

Achron seems like it would be a complete mess for larger games. Not a knock on the game, but an unavoidable consequence of the timetravel mechanics. I should dig out my Achron account one of these days, haven't played it in years...

As for ZK 1v1, it's quite variable based on time of day (as has been said) but also based on what players happen to be currently active. It would only take a couple of habitual 1v1 players being busy for a week to make it very hard to find games regularly.

I thought I'd start with the non-descriptive "it's terrific" so that that my others points wouldn't be taken to be too negative. If you'd like me to be more specific: the most important thing is that I've had alot of fun playing over the past week. If people don't have fun immediately then a large number will bounce off a game like this. Now don't give new people being nice about your game a hard time :)

Install was Windows 7 64.

The unit guide is excellent by the way, it's just alot to take in in one go.

Personally I'd rather risk wasting one persons time in a 1v1 that ruin a perfectly good larger team game. The counters are so complex when you start that 1v1 will expose you to a more restrictive roster of units that you might just get a handle on.

Am I still going to play it? I think so. People have generally been patient. I'm rather bored with Starcraft after sinking an embarrassingly large amount of time into it over the past couple of years. This scratches my TA itch rather nicely too. I'd also mention that the pace of the (smaller) games that I've played is excellent: straight into some early skirmishing with a minute and I'm usually wrecked by my oppos superior strategy and tactics within 10.

Empty and full games can be filtered via checkbox. Input field can be used for some additional filters:

-password
hides passworded games, a checkbox would be nice tho

v1.2.9.9
only shows current zk stable games

Can't find a working filter for engine versions though.

Thanks for the -password tip!

In team games, you're going to be assigned to teams according to your elo, so being bad is not that much of a problem (especially if you mention it at the start of the game so that your teammates are aware that they probably will have to help you), and since you have more time and less pressure than in a 1vs1 you can usually ask questions even during the game.

Of course that only applies when you have at least learned the basics, and for that there are also single player missions, AI and chicken skirmishes, and spectating games.
If you didn't knew, you can join any non-passworded game, even full ones, and start spectating it even if it has started for an hour - your computer will just have to catch up to the simulation.
Spectating is an excellent time to ask questions, just use "s:" and labeled notifications when the discussion might reveal any information that could be considered as speccheating.

FRrankBlueTemplar: why do you keep pushing teams? We could use more 1v1 players and I'm glad CoffeeM has the right mindset in approaching 1v1 play.

Did you play the tutorial or just jump right in? I'm not saying you should play the tutorial, I just want to know how you approached ZK at first.

Also, could you be more specific about what was confusing? I can suggest some possible candidates if you are having a hard time organizing your thoughts.

CZrankAdminLicho (the main server/infrastructure dev) is working on a system where you click a button to enter a queue for a gametype, much like StarCraft 2, though apparently it may not handle maps the same way due to lobby compatibility concerns. That is, each queue would be for gametype and map, with the map changing after every game.

I'm pushing teams because I don't see the current 1vs1 as a fun way to learn the game (from the point when you already know the basics to the point where you know most of the features) unless you get lucky to have the much stronger player in front of you to want to teach you the game instead of playing competitively.

Really? I figured getting screamed at by sfireman for not playing perfectly on your first go is far less fun than simply losing in a 1v1, especially since at least in a 1v1 that loss was all on things you personally can fix.

Is getting a helpful 1v1 partner really that lucky? I got the impression that angry duelizts are much better at people skills than the teams masses.

I don't think I ever encountered people being rude in the 1v1 room, and if there its something rude its playful banter.
