With migration to Spring 98 from Spring 91 it is now necessary to ensure LIBSDL2 is installed. Otherwise spring engine crashes in Zero-K lobby upon join. Installing libsdl2 fixes!
Debian-based distros:
Anarchid in ubuntu "sudo apt-get install libsdl2-2.0-0" solves the problem
Archlinux:
sudo pacman -S sdl2

This has been noted on the download page since 97 was released.

Yeah. But maybe some people wonder why they cannot play on bleeding edge host.
So it is good idea to point that out, maybe without Capslock next time. :-)

Also Spring98 gives me two issues. First issue: horrible gfx glitches. Second issue: intermittent mini-freezes, where mouse locks up. Last about 0.4s each.

Why do you play with safemode on (--safe-mode in your command line)? Try to unclick the checkbox in ZKL.
I had the glitch shown in your screenshot, but it disapeared with proprietary Nvidia drivers and "widgetDetailLevel = 2" setting in the config file. Try to set it up as well.
Also you may want to circle through Low, Medium, High and Ultra graphical setting as one of them may do the trick.

That weird appearance of nanospray there is exactly what I saw running medium settings under intel graphics (actually software mode, spring doesn't support anything except official ati and nvidia drivers, even under linux). Turning off safe mode may help, and from your paste I can see that spring says everything is ok. If turning safe mode off doesn't help, you may need to up/downgrade your drivers.

, Actually it says everything is terrible in the graphical department. I suspect safe-mode is one to blame.
I have two laptops with legacy and new proprietary Nvidia driver running the same Linux flavor. They both run latest 98+ devel fine.
Glitch like this is well known both under Linux and Windows. Usually it gets resolved by switching from Intel to discrete videocard, installing proprietary ATi/Nvidia driver under Linux or doing voodoo magic with springsettings.cfg

For the reference, this is likely a config/hardware issue since Lynx now reports having it on 91.0 as well.
A suggestion to fix seems to be to disable safemode.

Second issue: intermittent mini-freezes, where mouse locks up. Last about 0.4s each.
Please check if those happen in a local game against CAI by starting the engine binary directly.

Argh! Safe mode indeed thanks everyone. I suppose ZKL set that when I tried to run spring98 without SDL2. Thanks for help all, particularly Anarchid (how does one link player names properly anyway?).

To link a name put @ before the name. @*Lynx would become Lynx if you removed the *. See

for more information.
