I'm running Zero-K on linux through steam. It worked yesterday but now when I run the game, a small steam window opens that says "syncronizing steam cloud", it closes (cloud status: up to date) and then nothing happens. Here's what it says in the terminal:

Can anyone help me figure this out?

Hmm could you please try to launch it without steam?

sudo apt-get mono-complete libmono-system-windows-forms4.0-cil libcurl4 libmono-system-runtime-serialization4.0-cil libmono-system-net-http4.0-cil
mkdir Zero-K
cd Zero-K
wget https://zero-k.info/lobby/Zero-K.exe
chmod u+x Zero-K.exe
mono Zero-K.exe

Are there any other issues in logs?

Both my son and I have the same problem. Steam downloaded a ZeroK update and not it won't start at all on his or my pcs. We both run Arch based distros. Was working fine before latest update.

I see in the folder there is a Zero-K_linux64 and a Zero-K_linux64.sh both get an error when trying from cli

I can't seem to edit a post, anyways running the .sh shows this
./Zero-K_linux64.sh: bad interpreter: /bin/sh^M: no such file or directory

running the binary shows

I tried installing now from the AUR ie not the Steam version and it also crashes. Though I'm not sure if the Linux version always used Mono? Anyways for now my son just enabled the Proton version. Running ZeroK on Windows for my ends up in a complete Windows crash and reboot so I only play games on Linux.

Zero-K_linux64.sh currently has CRLF line endings for some reason
Fixing that via
dos2unix Zero-K_linux64.sh
does the trick here
Zero-K_linux32.sh is also broken in the same way

"dos2unix Zero-K_linux??.sh" after locating that file, as suggested here, solves the issue but I think it can happen again in next update

Ok thats probably related to automated build which happens on windows machine.. have to somehow switch git in repo to not add CRLF

Just did an update 40ish MiB, also did a verify. Unfortunately still doesn't start. As a matter of interest whats changed, my son was saying earlier that it was working fine a week ago. Also apparently he can't play properly through Proton alt + tabbing messing up the hotkeys or something.

I appreciate the fast response, just wondering what could have changed in the recent builds that break on Linux, after all we have had updates for the last year without issues.

Has ZeroK always used Mono?

The script doesn't appear to give errors like before (bad interpreter etc) but the executable still does

Experiencing the same issues. Running zero-k on ubuntu through steam. Yesterday, after installing the update, the game wouldn't run and I got an error message on Steam. I did the update today and tried to play the game, but it just wouldn't start. This time, there wasn't any error message.

Not sure where to go from here - would appreciate some help.

Can confirm; yesterday the game worked fine (modulo having to fix the script),
after the update it doesn't start at all. Stacktrace is identical to the one ZArankLemonised posted above.

So just an update. I see now another 70Mb came out. Steam downloaded it and it still doesn't open.

So I manually installed Mono. Game opens. Which is odd cause I haven't explicitly installed in the past nor did I explicitly remove it. Also on my sons pc it is not installed.

However after opening it I noticed my second screen went all multi coloured and you couldn't make out anything. I quit the game and it returned to normal. But for around 3-4 mins Steam still thought Zero-K was running.

Spec is 5950x, 5700XT with nvme based storage. The stop / play icon normally changes in seconds.

Even though it appears we have a workaround I'm very curios to know what recent major changes were made? In my experience .NET / Mono is atrocious when it comes to performance of native languages not to mention avg 10x more ram for the equivalent task. Look at any apps using .NET the moment they have to deal with large amounts of data they require 4+ Gigs and multi core setups vs their competitors which can do the same with just a single core and only 200mb ram). I assume Mono is the same?

I did take a quick look on github and saw .NET has been there for years but to what extent "new stuff" has happened no idea and also not sure why I'd have to explicitly install it now.

This is still one of the best if not the best RTS's out there from a design / ui / stability perspective so thank you Devs!

My little grain of salt
Steam says it needs to validate a game file every time you try to start your game on GNU/Linux.

It's always a single file, independently of the number of times you try to start the game (unsuccessfuly).

Steps to reproduce:
1. Validate game files. A file may or may not have to be validated.
2. Try to play the game.
3. Validate again. Now a file WILL need to be validated.

It always happens to me.

Also, `dos2unix` does not solve the problem for me. Using Steam on Void Linux.

LOL Installing libgdiplus solved it for me

Looking at the first line of the stacktrace thrown when executing Zero-K_linux64.sh after converting it's line endings with dos2unix gave me the solution.

The stack trace

It clearly indicated that libgdiplus.so.0 was missing from my system.
