Just want to say a big thank you to all the Zero K developers for making such a splendid game. I always thought there was something special about the original TA, I have even kept the 4CD game pack with battle tactics and core contingency together with game manual, and I think the same way now about Zero K. Wonderful to see how this original concept has been picked up on and made even better. At first I was sceptical about flat technology tree etc., but I see now how great care has been taken to balance out units whilst maintaining diversity, greatly enriching the experience. I very much enjoyed reading and discussing the maths behind the overdrive functionality. Terrific to see such thought going into the game. I greatly appreciate shadowfury333's video casts on YouTube. They helped me see what a great game Zero K has become. I see a great community and team spirit. On my very first game someone showed me what to do and I very much appreciated that.

Few thoughts for the future:

1) Building up player base is essential for this game. Sometimes I see a little condescension in chat with terms like wub, nab, etc., being used and I think this could be off putting, especially since Zero K is quite challenging to get to grips with at the beginning. By contrast, a friendly and supportive player base works wonders I am sure. I don't think certain terms should be prohibited, it's more a question of tone.

2) Is there IP in Zero K, as in intellectual property? It's non commercial but when steam comes along will it still be? How will IP be managed wrt steam?

3) Will steam be a positive thing for Zero K?

3) is a big step to solving 1).
For 2), old models that could be considered IP from TA were/are incrementally expunged.

PLrankOrfelius is having a bad mood(can be cured with forum ban :P)

Firepluk you're the living example that bans aren't useful as a cure.

Hmm actually yes it is!

As a rule, comments and forum posts should follow at least two of the three "nots":

Not be rude
Not be false
Not be damaging

I wonder why Kyubey or Skasi never got a forum ban for that

Thanks Lynx, it's really appreciated. As you can see we have a few trolls but on the whole the community is positive. We do our best here but we can only police behavior so much, so, there will always be some of that.

Steam release is our current goal, making sure that the new player experience is as smooth and easy as possible. We definitely want to expand our playerbase, but we've kept this game alive and ticking over for years now, which is the most important thing. Steam is our best prospect to get a boost of players.

All IP in Zero-K is appropriately licensed (Though we use a lot of licences and it's sometimes messy). Zero-K is open source and will remain free forever, we give cosmetic rewards in exchange for donations and that's how it will stay. Steam is getting better for free-to-play as that model becomes more popular, which suits a free open source game.

I expect steam release to be a big success (thanks to the recent free marketing from Planetary Annihilaiton), and leaves marks on the whole genre, make features like custom formations common for RTS.

The commerical success of a similar game would make people notice this game more.

The commercial success of similar game would make that game more noticable NOT Zero-k.
However imo ZK has missed a huge window of opurtinity, when just after the release of PA the game was unplayable and has created many disapointed TA-like games fans and if ZK would have release in lets say October it could have been a major sucess (if it would had been ready at this time that is).
Because lets be honest: Planetary Annihilation did not live up to the hype at all. It is still decent enough for some players to play it still however :)

PA seems to have made quite a lot of people notice ZK. In the earlier development stages of PA people on the forums often talked about ZK and it's great UI and automation features compared to what Uber was making for PA. That was a decent amount of exposure.

Even currently, every now and then somebody on the PA forums mentions Spring or ZK. A while ago a bunch of the guys from one of the bigger PA clans started playing ZK. It seems they didn't stay, however ZK definitely has been 'noticed' a lot more thanks to PA.

Yes EErank[ISP]Lauri but that is mostly due to that traitorous frog!
(both joking and being serious here).

EErank[ISP]Lauri isn't wrong. I'm a case in point. I mean, I had heard of ZK beforehand and messed about a bit on the Isis Delta sandbox, but I never tried it multiplayer until AUrankAdminGoogleFrog started commenting in the PA forums about ZK's design.

PR idea: creating "ZK RTS fanclub thread" on multiple game forums. Just copy paste from all the excellent stuff GF posted on the PA forums with more .GIFV links.
