Yes, It is a Great game, I came to trying it because it was showcased by Major Geeks (majorgeeks.com), whom I have trusted for over a Decade to be my source for previously - previewed items ( My First computer was hit by NUKES, so my second one, I searched out safer download sources : there wasn't many back then, but MG was there. )

There is the only real complaint of the self upgrade with every start....as opposed to once a day or such, I can not locate a setting for that...

Other then that, I really like this game & the forum members seem really like a really bad crowd to get mixed up with ..
Just the way I like players to be :)

Ok, I just wanted to say HI
now I got to get Murdered by a Dragon.........

It is necessary to do this in order to ensure you have the newest version (otherwise you wouldn't be able to play with other people). Now the update itself could be a bit faster, but it is what it is.

I second the thank you. As an avid TA fan, I didn't think there would be an RTS to rival that old dinosaur, and then, along comes the grandchild of TA to prove me wrong. Devs have done a truly fantastic job on ZK. Kudos, kudos, kudos.

Thanks, do you have a link to the showcase? The frequency of self upgrade checks is a necessity at the moment because we need everyone at least using the same engine version and AIs for multiplayer. The Steam package of the game has no self update and instead depends on the Steam update, which only occurs when an update is required. If you are interested in testing Steam I could send you a key as we need testers for Steam things like the coop campaign.

I guess adding an option like: "Do you want to upgrade now? Warning: You won´t be able to play Multiplayer if not!" takes too much time to implement or are there other, technical reasons?

I don't find anything related to Zero-K in Major Geeks's youtube channel, but it is on their facebook page and website:

As my internet can be spotty at times, Chobby's need to check for updates at every launch has sometimes locked me out of playing Zero-K all-together. I have to manually disable my ethernet adapter, so Chobby fails to update completely instead of trying to update at 0.2 KB/s.

I'd go for a launch option, like "$ Mono Chobby.exe --skip-update". No need for GUI-elements, and difficult to use without knowing what you're doing.

How many people don´t know what they are doing if you ask: "Update: Yes or No?"

So as Google said, a Steam build would ensure you're always up-to-date so it wouldn't need to check on each launch.
Generally I don't think players should be given an easily accessible option because we really want to make sure they have the newest version (otherwise we need to check their version whenever some bug happens, and it can be non-trivial to do that if there is an infra-related issue somehow).

A command line option, or an offline-only mode is a different story, but it would take some work to make Chobby truly offline-only.

wait, would that mean if i don´t have steam, i cant update in such a case?

No. "The Steam build" is not a future build that will replace the current one and break auto-updating. The Steam builds already exist alongside the standard one and we already have some people on Steam testing that they work.

i do use steam to play. am i a tester? (also, it updates every evening - my subjective impression)
