Kodachi, what is good and bad about it? What do people find frustrating? Is the idea of a high-alpha flame raider able to be anything which is not either OP, useless, or extremely knife edge?

It's a high weight, high alpha, high aoe, health regenerating raider. These might just be a little too many polarizing attributes.

I think you could nerf any of these in order to achieve a more enjoyable interaction with other raiders. Does it really take all of this to make the Kodachi unique?

As a concept it's very cool and fun.
I'd probably up the cost and reduce the explosion damage (though being sure to keep its ability to one-shot mexes) and reduce the AoE.

Kodachi on repeat beats LV pretty much(assuming you survive to the point of having 3+ kodachis).

I hate alpha heavy raiders because their interactions are super 1 sided. Have 1 koda vs 1 scorcher? Koda dies and you can't do anything about it. 3 koda vs 3 scorcher? Scorchers get murdered and theres nothing you can do about it. Makes the earlygame feel very RPS.

Dagger is an example of this too. They are utter trash vs anything that isn't a glaive.

Kodachi is probably a little overpowered. I usually love it when I'm using it early and I hate it when the other guy has them and is circling my base like Jaws.

That said, I think it's OK for some units to be better than others and given how slow tanks are to hit a decent production its maybe a good thing. If the cost went back to 180 it might be better, though.

Or maybe lengthen the range of Picket by a tiny bit?

I always feel like when people try to balance these "knife-edge" units, they go overboard. These units, like Kodachi, Dagger,Scalpel can go from UP to OP with one "small" balance change. I don't think these units are conceptually bad, I just think the balance changes tend to miss the sweet spot.

The most frustrating thing about Koda in my interactions is the way that even one vomiting can effortlessly obliterate clutches of glaives, bandits and daggers (and ducks?). Sure you can micro a line and maybe only one or two will take the hit, but the chances of actually dispatching it against a comparably skilled opponent are minimal. Even if the light raiders can stay close enough, long enough to finish it, chances are they'll all burn to death as well.

The Koda is rather like the pyro, in that it works like a mini-riot albeit quite differently from the pyro. Perhaps its price point should reflect that (200-220)? It could probably also afford to lose some speed and AOE. If the wiki is still accurate, it has a bigger AOE than even the Ogre which seems a bit mad for 160 metal.

Regeneration is a good point, no other alpha raider has regeneration (unless you count a submerged Duck). I don't feel like removing regen solves the problem of design. A Kodachi without regen may well be owled, but I would like to do better than an owling. Kodachi vs. Scorcher sums up many of the problems with Kodachi because a Kodachi can beat a Scorcher, in theory, but it is very easy to mess up and let the Scorcher into range.

Dagger and Duck seem like much better behaved alpha raiders, even though they have been problematic at times. Dagger is faster than most other raiders and Duck is slower than most raiders, and they are balanced around this, so they aren't so APM dependent. They are also lower weight and lack regeneration.

It seems bad that Tank has two alpha raiders. More generally, how can Tank be made as excellent as Rover?

The two most frustrating parts of Koda are:

1. Speed. This fucking thing is hard to keep up with, even with glaives. It's a really, really fast riot.

2. Regeneration. By the time you've done your damage, in 5 seconds, it starts regening and you start resigning.

One issue I think important to note is that using Kodachi well requires a fair bit of babysitting and micro, you can't just attack move into the enemy's base.
Thus I'd expect it to not be unbalanced for the majority of players who are below Giant.

Offtopic for a moment: Forget making tank as excellent as rovers, how about making everything else as excellent as rovers too. Rovers are by far the most flexible factory with an answer for literally all other factories bar perhaps shieldbots.

Back to kodachi. The massive AoE is a bit much.

Regen could be a bit less brutal, but please don't nerf this to death like blitz.

Things i like about Kodachi:
- Lightest tank unit, the only way to scout
- Can run around base, killing mexes with one shot

Things i don't like about kodachi:
- A whole bunch of polarising mechanics in raider vs raider fights
- Obscene riot capacity

IMO Koda would be fine with more of these good things and less of the bad ones:
- Lower weight, both reducing weight- based polarisation and increasing scout potential
- Lower or completely remove its AoE. It will still oneshot mexes, but not oneshot whole glaive balls
- Lower or ditch regen

I imagine this being less of a super-Scorcher weight all-purpose riot raider and more like a scorcher-sized raider-scout capable of oneshotting mexes and finding phantoms as well as fighting other raiders on more or less even terms.

Yeah Kodachi could be nerfed a bit (regen?) and blitz could be buffed back a little.
blitzes got a damage and range-nerf angainst their scaling. Since range restricts their
balling anyway, maybe move damage to a point between now and pre-nerf.

If you still want it to have OP regen, dial it back by increasing the delay to 10 or 15 seconds, or make the count down start only when it's not moving(if that's possible). These allow it to retreat and self repair at a reasonable rate, but chasing is more rewarding because the koda will not regen or regen as much during a chase.

I played some nice 1v1s with CHrankDrDoom today where tanks repeatedly lost to other factories. Kodachi might really not even need a nerf, but making its balance lie less on a knife edge would be favorable.

Regen is fine. Glaives and Scythes have regen too but aren't OP. It's the riot-nature that's most problematic.

Though if it IS changed as Anarchid suggests then tank may have a serious lack of riot in the opening game (given how pricey Ogre is).

Tank has combat cons to offset that lack.

there is a differenc between glaives regening and koda since the latter has way more hp and is basically impossible to kill without traps.

Just make it cost 180 again ...
