Modern games tend to have very noisy graphics. Older games look cleaner

Damn will somebody look at those light reflections on the environment from your bullets? How the heck is this game just 96KB????

The overwhelming majority of modern games are made purely as money grabbing devices either for personal benefit or for the benefit of stakeholders/stockholders. Creativity and new IPs risk not being profitable which doesn't look great for those stockholders who want ever increasing profits. Keep in mind that C-Suits also get stock incentives and you start to see the problem of why you don't see any new blockbuster IP. This is why games feel cold to you; you're essentially picking up on the corporatism seeping in.

Here i'm wearing my own severed face on my second face so that i can wear an augmented reality device on my first face, and i don't know what games you're talking about

I believe this is more an issue due to game development becoming a career path rather than a side hobby. There probably are people making nice little indie games and projects, but they don't end up as mainstream games.

What's happening is that people wanting to make games for a living often have to target what's easiest to market and get a quick and big ROI. Hence they need to rush development and get the latest gimmicky features into their games along with ways to get themselves quickly monetized, so file size kinda goes out the window. They've also got to target the demographic of people most willing to spend money on such games - what you end up with is a bunch of rushed titles that appeals to a broad group of people who'd rather pay to play what's trending at the moment. Of course they also then have the responsibility towards shareholders.

There's nothing inherently wrong with that. You've just got to go looking for the cool indie titles or games that fit your criteria. A large group of people only play a few popular titles, you just have to avoid them.

I think there might be some bias with that statement. I am sure there are more boring/stupid/corporate games, so indeed finding the great titles might take more effort than before. That being said I have played some amazing (at least for me) games recently - would list NierAutomata, DeathStranding, ItTakesTwo or Gibous (all new, different genres). And all are obviously well funded, professionally done games.

The 13k quake in a browser makes me think about how much stuff is in a browser and how much computing power we use just for abstraction sake. Has benefits but man that's a lot.

The demo scene was crazy but in the end a lot are down to compression/procedural generation. Impressive but you might still require some significant loading time or cpu power, when in the end nowadays storage is the cheapest thing.

Guess any Homebrew (video games) made nowadays for Atari, NES, Genesis, SNES, etc... applies too.

Last that i did remember (Retro City Rampage: 486) {GTA 1&2 like}:
It's the FULL GAME (in 1.44MB floppy disk!), and NOT just a Demo/1 map thing. If it was released in old times i think it would have been a huge success, like the Homebrews above.

https://www.vblank.com/product_rcrsteam.php

quote:

MS-DOS Version (Retro City Rampage: 486)
Actually runs on 486 DX PCs!
Includes installer; Fits on a single 1.44MB floppy disk!

System Requirements:
486 DX IBM PC
4 MB RAM
3.7 MB free hard disk space
256-color VGA graphics
MS-DOS 3.3 or higher

Normal version: Retro City Rampage DX is 23MB

Found a NES version of Retro City Rampage too ("ROM City Rampage"):

KeeperRL an Open Source Dwarf Fortress alternative:

and lot's of Roguelikes....

Unknown and niche, but that i did like:

Anarch (200 KB) (needs only 200 KB, 32 KB RAM, 40 MHz CPU!) (FPS)
(Not sure if a good FPS, but dev did focus to make code clean and easy to study)

https://drummyfish.gitlab.io/anarch/
https://gitlab.com/drummyfish/anarch

In old times emulators where very small too, it was when them did begin using Qt GUI and similar that them got to MegaByteS (MBs) sizes...
Exemples:
Kega Fusion 3.64 Windows (383.5 KB)
ZSNES 1.51 (913.1 KB)
SameBoy 0.14.5 (802 KB)
BGB 1.5.9 (468 kB)
Etc...
http://melonds.kuribo64.net/board/thread.php?id=5
https://helmet.kafuka.org/qt.html
https://near.sh/articles

quote:

by Byuu/Near (BSNES Dev):

The most obvious problem is Qt's sheer size. Qt weighs in at a massive 150MB download. The run-time DLLs just for the core application are about 15MB. Add in WebKit, and all the other nice features, and you're looking at 40MB.

If you are writing the next Photoshop or Opera, this certainly isn't a huge deal. But when your hello, world app needs 15MB of DLLs that no computer out there has already, it can become a problem. When you have more than 100 users and you have to pay the hosting bill, it can become a problem. When you have dial-up users, it can be a problem.

...

All of this effort will net you a 4MB Qt run-time with a fraction of the feature set.

anyway...
