I have to spectate a game before I play or I can't finish loading before game starts.

Why?

Did you try disabling firewall? I had that when I didn't have a rule specified in firewall.

Some firewalls disable the rule when the executable changes, like after an update.

Various types of caching. Playing on a new game version, engine version, or map each requires its own part of caching. Thankfully map caching tends to be the fastest. Also games can be in one of two formats. Games and mods sdz, which are a single file so are relatively fast. Games downloaded via rapid tags (such as zk:test, or the main version of ZK if you don't update on steam) are in a lot of little files so take longer.

Needing to restart to connect to a new ZK stable seems to be relatively rare. The bottlenecks will be disk access speed and CPU.

Thanks for your explanation AUrankAdminGoogleFrog, tho I see the need to clarify it since the issue isn't quite about the behavior after updates or playing new maps. What I meant by "game" was matches, not the program. I meant, the first match loaded after each launch of the program took really long time, regardless of updates. As I said I have to "spectate a game" to give it time to load. After that it loads normally.

For a little more context I noticed this issue only in recent months. Pretty sure it wasn't like that last year.

Btw, might be related, the game will create a folder named "a" at the root directory of my HDD. Why is that the case and is it really necessary?

Many types of caching are wiped after the program exits.

Game launched after update: has to load and recalculate everything.

No update, but first game after the program just launched: some things are already cached from previous program run and can be loaded from disk, but many aren't and have to be recalculated.

Program already launched, next match: almost everything was already loaded and stored in program memory.

I appreciate the method but it is kind of a common thing so maybe their is another universal solution that fixes it?

I have this problem after every computer restart. If I play a game then close and open steam chobby I don't have the problem, only restarting my computer.

I know I play with my standby memory being wiped every so often, since a lot of games seemed to hoard it and I played a variety, the issue definitely got worse after switching to that
