formation ranks

how does the option formation ranks work?
how do i use it?

In short if you activate it and set ranks the line-walk is spaced perpendicular on the rank.
So:

11111111111
22222222222
33333333333
44444444444

Allowing you to move in formation. So you put riots in front and artillery a line behind that.
Not sure if this is all correct as I don't use it.

You set the rank of the unit where the other states are (move/stand-ground/hold fire/etc).
