Time to give mason some kind of good feature, a buff, like every other constructor has one.
Convict : shield
Welder : HP and damage
Constable : Jump
etc
Mason just feels like a fat block of cheese with 4 wheels right now, was thinking of the idea of giving it some type of rocker booster :D
(Imagine an enemy commander escaped with low health, so you use your mason to super boost into the commander hitting it and killing :D)
But really mason should receive some type of special feature. Don't really care what it will be, just give it something

block of cheese made me lol.. ill just add some ideas to the pile. since they kind of look like chronotanks how about very short range self teleporter? or maybe a small +2 generator with bigger sd/death explosion or both?

TheFlyingFortress
Maybe some sort of good regeneration ability compared to the other constructor units?

an emp stunner that deals no damage but can deal decent emp damage mason could use to escape easily

Make it the fastest constructor since it is rover. Problem solved.

The ability to shut down enemy buildings by reclaiming them. A rover should steal whatever he can.

120 cost, 1000 hp. 69elmo/s, 300 vision, 5bp. This is relatively comparable to Quill(Quill's only strengths are in water-usability and 18 higher elmo/s). Overall, Mason has generally comparable stats per cost with most cons(barring Constable, which is statistically terrible), but this is offset by Mason being in a factory with significantly stronger and more varied raiders, thus enhancing their earlygame.

Calling Mason a bad unit is simply wrong, and saying it needs some sort of feature is entirely unnecessary, because it exists in a strong position where it is intuitive to use for the most "typical" vehicle factory, and its relative weakness(which only barely exists) is solidly offset by the rest of their earlygame.

Now that I look at it, Mason does outrace every robot factory builder, outside of units which are SUPPOSED to be faster than mason. So, they indeed are the fastest unit, technically speaking. Hovers don't count, they're all fragile glass cannons and they need something to compensate their wonkiness. Masons are only outpaced by wasps and cranes, both of which are flying units. However, if somebody reaches the point where they can switch factories, it's almost always more beneficial to build athenas instead, since athenas have way better control over the map and they can quickly finish a started blueprint.

Therefore, no, Mason is the fastest builder wherever it is relevant. However, that does not justify a lack of a cool ability (saying this as a biased Rover player)

on the topic of special abilities, mason's little turret seems well protected when it is not building. maybe it can get a buff for when it's not building. though that might require a similar buff to spiders.

Weaver already has radar, fat build range and spider movement its a pretty op con as is.

Why does hovercon outrun mason?

hover is generally faster and glasscannony

The Constable also outruns mason, so long as it uses it's jump. Constable is actually really fast and has a slow gun, for 20 metal more. Not to mention jump and it's movetype.

The Quill is dramatically faster than mason, and has 960hp instead of... 1000, for 5 more metal. And can go on water.

Hovercon outruns mason because it doesn't suffer from friction. As a rover player, that makes sense to me.

Constable is horrible, it's meant to be able to fight, but its horrible damage and health makes you look silly if you use constable for combat repairs.

I don't really feel underwhelmed by Mason as someone whose most used factory is rover but at the same time it is weird that every other con has something unique going for it and mason has nada. +1 to the caretaker morph suggestion.

Cliver5:
I never understood constable as being meant to fight; more as being meant to be able to slow down chasing raiders so it can escape.
All the other factory cons abilities are meant to be defensive.
