Kinda a pointless post I am just so impressed with this game I have played RTS games since the command and conquer days and seen all sorts of evolutions.. I really like the balance with this one. even as a free game it stands out as an excellent rts game.

I wondered if there is a map editor? And I also wondered if I can add more maps to the skirmish mode as there are only 4?

Keep up the good work! I wish I could help with the project, I am a filmmaker and do some animation but not a coder...

Let me know if I can help in some way.

Great fun this game!

thanks!

Welcome, I experienced the same emotions when I came to ZK for the first time

welcome!

nice to see a new face as we are a pretty small community and the rts genre is, say, not the most popular genre there is!

what sold you on zerok? add your opinion here.

yes, you can make maps. it is, however, not that out of the box-comfortable.
wiki howto is here
maybe there is more in the deeps of the forum.

1) models and/or movement animation might be your thing? ask in the forum where to start (i have no clue!).
2) also, anything which brings new players is welcome. as: game commentary (e.g. like https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtPGJH0GtMA0jwX6dtivOhGri6mMqZRDi ) , videotrailers (see also here)

You can change the map to ones others than the 4 preselected maps by going into advanced options while setting up the skirmish. Then you can choose from a much larger selection of maps, though you may have to download them. You can also add more AI players, if you so choose. Making custom maps is possible. There's a guide here, and feel free to ask any questions either here on the forum or in discord under the #zkmap channel if you need some help.

TA -> XTA -> BA -> CA -> ZK has been the greatest RTS gaming journey. 25 years of the same game continually evolving. There is jank, but IMO ZK is the genre leader in gameplay - something you can only arrive at in RTS through a lifetime of iteration.

I agree.

I've been a FPS player who has never understood RTS games or seriously played them beyond easy AI games (I'd get stomped in multiplayer or even normal mode).

I think RTS games are by nature very competitive, like a fighting game, because in most RTS games you are totally responsible for your own loss or victory, which makes the pressure much higher and "getting good" a necessity if you want to have fun. In FPS games you can just piggyback on your teammates and there is a collective feeling of camaraderie when you push with your group. This isn't the case in a genre where the biggest team games are 3v3s.
Now, I appreciate the intellectual depth and competitiveness of RTS, as I have tasted it in Zero-K, which even has large team games unlike any other RTS.

I don't think that's remotely accurate. Whether it be visual design or size of playerbase, BAR is noticeably ahead of ZK, and for a good reason.

True as it may be in 1v1s and single-player campaign, this is not something relevant for typical lobsterpot ZK games.

I would say one defining difference of BAR and ZK is individualist and communal economy. Economy of BAR gives player a complete freedom to operate his mex possessions - any achievements or shortcomings are, consequently, placed solely on the shoulders of a player in question.

In contrast, economy of ZK makes sure that even the most oppressive player is held back by a mandatory metal tax, while a complete incompetence of a player still has a steady stream of income to waste, thus piggy-backing on his superior teammates.

I would then posit that such team dynamics of ZK provide a ground for players in the team to feel frustrated about, and blame teammates for bad outcome of a given game. That is something that is, although present, is noticeable to much lesser degree in BAR.

Glad someone said it, I've bought alot of RTS games, Rise of Nations, Supurme Commander, Total War, C&C, Total Anihlation (Back in the day) TA Kingdoms and this really tops them all by quite a lot.

I said gameplay, not graphics or popularity :-)

BAR is great, but more concerned with refinement of the original TA recipe than innovation.

Did the atmosphere in BAR improved in the last years? Last time I played players were quite verbally aggressive and annoying to a much larger degree than in ZK (not to me in particular). For me the atmosphere felt more "competitive" in the sense of finding and repeating the best strategy. In ZK's last years I was still positively impressed by the diversity of team games strategies/outcomes and dynamics (but ofc there will be boring, repeatable games, here as well).
