Unless you happen to be in the top 50 list no. That was an intentional decision for... reasons i'm not sure of anymore.

It was a god thing to be able to look for my elo ... i could compare it to friends`s but now it`s lost....

You can see your overall elo (not 1v1) rounded to the nearest 50 in the Chili Deluxe Player List (press F11 in game, preferable a single-player game).

Some time ago, they removed team elo ratings and showed only 1v1 elo. Then that was removed shortly after. The justification for removing visible team elo was smurfing, but the additional hiding of 1v1 elo was done without any announcement or public discussion.

I don't suppose any of the people making the decision could explain it? I don't know about you, but I've heard plenty of complaints about hidden elo and none about visible elo.

You can join the EXPERIENCED players room and type !balance. It'll tell you how much elo you have if you have less than the minimum required to play there, which is 1600.

Elo visible everywhere leads to too much competetivness among players which is never a good thing.

It leads to screaming at newbies, smurfing, voteexiting etc. Elo will be hidden from reamining places too except for top 50 players.

I agree with your overcompetitiveness reasoning, although I don't think it will have that big of an effect. In that event, could we at least be able to see them for ourselves, just so we at least know how we're doing? Now from my understanding, there are supposed to be dude icons that represent an "elo bracket." If so, that sounds like a suitable compromise. It gives us some measure of skill, without the nitpicking of exact elo. Could we get those dude icons on our user pages? Note: I am a Linux/Springlobby user, so I can't see the dude icons.

With regards to the screaming at newbies, I don't quite see where you're going and what elo has to do with it, unless you're referring to the overcompetitiveness aspect. In the case, it wouldn't prevent people from yelling at newbs when they're losing the game. Besides, we can already tell who is a newbie by looking at their number of chevrons.

I don't see how elo encourages smurfing, and I don't think I've seen a proper explanation of how it does exactly. If you can provide one, I will take it into consideration. At the time being my arguments against hiding elo to prevent smurfing are basically the same as some of those in that hidden elo announcement thread. ( http://zero-k.info/Forum/Thread/3754 )

Voteexiting, I don't see as a bad thing. If the game is severely unbalanced, of course the players would want to exit the game (at the beginning). This would be a problem fixed by modifying the balancer to even out the newbies.

Game is waiting for new rank icons by USrankluckywaldo7 see the req icons thread..

All other things i mentioned are caused by too big competetivness..
Displaying elo for yourself is not optimal either because it does go down demotivating some people or causing competetivness in them..

Top50 might have it visible on the home page, others will have to do with brackets when icons are done.

Licho, ELO was hidden for quite some time now. It still doesn't stop expirienced players scream at newbies on the "newbies welcome" server. Actually it's very rare (less than once per day) that I see a useful advice which is usually on the level of "build units" or "play singleplayer".

Therefore I humbly suggest that when expirienced players go to the newbies server they should be prepared to spend some time *teaching newbies instead of playing*.

I spent some time getting new players to return to Xonotic's competitive scene after their first visit so I know what I'm talking about. It really pays off. If you see somebody doing something very wrong you should offer help, get a 1v1 server and teach some tricks. It works better for the playerbase than "RTFM" or "go play against AI first".

BTW in Xonotic you can always see everyone's ELO on http://stats.xonotic.org. It *does not make* anyone misbehave towards newbies on team games.

It's the community's problem. Everyone's. It has little to do with ELO.

Nothing changed since elo disappered. smurfs still get kicked. not hard when you know a level 1 is playing like a pro. plus most voteexit happen when players go afk or teams are uneven in numbers.

I still rage, others still rage. I have not seen a increase or decrease in it. I think if someone costs the team a game. People still rage.

I don't know how me not seeing or knowing my elo makes any difference to me hating to lose :/ also I want to get into TOP 50. so I don't see how that makes any difference.

I have not seen any difference from when elo was visable and not visable.

To be honest. I think the issue lies with how balancing is done. Newbies get teamed up with pros and that really the only reason......

it does require quite a load of time on benefactor's part. And it's why i think nothing short of technofascist skill segregation policy will ever solve this. And even that solution leaves issue of smurfing out.

Elo is not hidden yet, many players use playerlist which shows it.
Thats why its still an issue.

Licho, could you please read my comment? :)

Xonotic has everyone's ELO shown and it doesn't have this issue. Why do you think hiding ELO will solve the issue Zero-K has?

Licho you are crazy. if i know of the existance of a ranking. I will be competitive. if someone wants to win, they will moan at people. how does elo come into this equation.

If ranking was completely removed then it would stop people being competitive because then there is no need to be competitive.

Ever heard the saying "hiding something doesn't necessary mean it go away"

That also has been discussed some time back. The problem is not the balancing, it's that we simply don't have enough people to fill a "highskilled" and a "lowskilled" room. And even then newbies wouldn't learn either (who should they learn from?).

You simply have to teach newbies how to play, there's no way around it. Not everyone has the endurance to get bashed in 1v1 until he's decent (although that would be a lot faster :) ...i think).

Naryl so? Chess has ELO ranking too and there is no issue!
Wait, its because there are no cooperating teams in chess, waits its because its COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GAME!! Just like Xenotic!

SO what happens when all the stuff mentioned still happens after elo has disappered?

we will we hide peoples names? should we be called Anon1, anon2, anon 3, anon 4? should we remove ranking? so we don't know newbies from vets?

just saying, where does the extremism stop?

Before Elo was introduced we had exactly the same problems you described. Blaming its visibility is the wrong thing to do. The only difference between displaying the number and not doing so is that with display ON people like me have an easier time teaching weak players and playing as a team.
