A new sonic experience for ZK, and a complete replacement for existing ZK music. For those who are looking for battlefield atmosphere with a dystopic sci-fi character rather then classical orchestra with cheesy chorals. This mainly Cruel Deity supported soundtrack features synths darker then the heat death of the universe itself, and fearlessly treads into metal in times of war.

7 catagories of music, 22 tracks, war, peace, briefing, victory, defeat, and a couple unused ones in /preload and /menu. Download is just around 100mb.

Extract the entire archive to Zero-K directory.

[OPTIONAL] head ingame and change the following setting:

Ingame Settings(aka F10 menu) / Audio / Disable "Use Included Tracks".

Category of music is controlled by the folder the .ogg is placed in. playlist.lua is unconfigured.

Edits by themooseisloose have EDIT appended on filename, they won't overwrite original tracks if you have a previous download of this soundtrack. Delete your sounds/music in Zero-K folder before unzipping, or just pick and choose which ones you want.

Main menu music is included but currently unimplemented.

Big thanks to Cruel Deity https://crueldeitymusic.bandcamp.com/

+1 for trying something new and the modern style. I don't think it actually works though. It's hard to make out any details with game sounds playing in parallel. Something a little simpler might be more fitting.

Having the music volume at 100% is only recommended for speccing teamgames really, if I'm actually participating in a game I use 75% or lower.

CArankTheMooseIsLoose at lower volumes it becomes even less recognizable and more noisy. Why would I want to have additional background noise? I'd rather turn down the game's sound effects for some good music.

Oh I thought you meant it was hard to make out sound effects with the music playing, I misunderstood. Personally I'm a fan of sound effects muddling the music, but I don't think that's something I can control.

The zip does not work for me. All files within it have some error and cannot be extracted.

I like songs in this .. imo we could afford greater variety of ingame music even at the cost of style mismatch.

I disagree.
Consistency is what gives character to a game, it is what makes it memorable.
You can't have a game where highly detailed 3D is used side by side with pixel art. Even though both can be absolutely magnificent and beautiful when alone, together the contrast will burn your eyes.

With soundtracks in movies and games it is the same. The instruments and the style create a game's mood. If something doesn't fit with the rest the mood will be broken, even though you wouldn't always be able to point out why.
When the mood is broken and people feel uneasy when playing ZK, they won't come back, as simple as that.

tl;dr: Consistency is crucial.

CArankTheMooseIsLoose, I finally got around to playing a little bit with the Dark Matter Soundtrack and it sounds wonderful with Zero-K. I actually pump up the music instead of turning it down.

The only annoying thing is that Cruel Deity wasn't as smart with their licensing as Marc A. Pullen so their music isn't a Free Cultural Work yet. Do you know any other projects that utilize both sets of music? I think that information will turn the needle.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, both are CC-variants, the only difference in licensing between the two is the Cruel Deity music is non-commercial. I also have written permission to use it in ZK, licensing aside.

Saeurbraten makes extensive use of Marc Pullen. Cruel Deity is apparently working on some of his own Unity things, but his tunes are not used in any other projects that I know of.

This article from @cameralibre will explain it better than I can. http://community.oscedays.org/t/why-are-non-commercial-licenses-not-open-source/569

I don't understand at all now, that article seems to be talking about calling cc-variant licenses open-source, which neither me or anybody in this thread is doing. The multi-paragraph vegan thing only confused me further.

EDIT: Researching further into that german court case, I can see your perspective here. A public broadcaster was found guilty of improper use of the cc-by-nc-2.0 photo. From what I can tell german prosecution made up their own definition of "noncommercial" as any use that's non-private. Aside from being totally bogus, it's something that was addressed in newer versions of CC licenses, which now provide a definition of noncommercial.

I think I am just skeptical of licenses with restrictions on use. With CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, and All rights reserved, there is no use restrictions beyond the limit of copyright. With CC-BY-NC, CC-BY-ND, and All rights reserved with digital restrictions management there could be restrictions implied beyond copyright law but no one knows exactly what they are because each publisher and lawyer interprets it differently. Those additional restrictions may be used to selectively chill expression.

I think I want to redo the peace side of this soundtrack eventually. Collaboration from others with fitting music would be welcome.

CArankTheMooseIsLoose what is wrong with the peace side exactly?

It's not nearly as good as the war side.

I have removed 07. Moments Before 2_2.ogg and both the Marc Pullen tracks from the peace album.
