Dealing with new players better

I have noticed several types of noobs
-RTS Gamers who learn quickly but don't yet know ZK stuff.
-'Average Joes' who will learn, but need much more time and the right conditions to learn to play well.
-Permanubs who are unwilling or more often unable to learn. They are either kids doing their best (there are many of these), or they are people here mainly for the free giant robots and aren't interested in learning strategies.

Ideally one would identify these people early, and then direct them into separate, appropriate rooms, for example by
-Offering tutorial streams to suit the player. Eg. ZK Tutorial for experienced RTS Gamers
-Looking at their performance against tutorial/CAI, then locking or unlocking rooms based on this performance.

Of course, we don't have a large enough community for many rooms. So, in the meantime, the following small changes could be useful?
-High ELO players were clearly marked for everyone to see by default(!), so they could wield a little bit of authority, particularly in in-game chat.
-There were clear signals to new players in game reminding them to listen to the experienced players. For example a message that came up telling them their 'team captain'.

This would reduce high elo rage, which in turn makes play more pleasant for nubs too. I feel particularly in the case of kids joining the game its pretty bad that they usually end up getting raged at.

Do others agree?

something like an in-game helper rank for players with experience and willingness to teach newbies might be nice. Maybe have it be a toggle option for anyone above a certain level. This way veteran players who are not willing to deal with new players won't get pestered with requests for instructions, and lower-elo veterans who nonetheless have a great grip on the basic gameplay features can help.

LOL yes i forgot da smurfs

I like helper rank if there was strong message to listen to the helpers. I think this rank should be awarded rather than self-assigned lol. I think there should be a bottom elo limit so REALLY bad advice isn't given :) And I think it would still be good if high elo non-helper players were 'team captains' or something similar.

:D it would be nice, i have ocasinaly helped people learn to play to at least a half decent level before...

but mostly this was 1v1 players, i can't even imagine trying to work something out in teams without going on a psychotic "ill kill evryone with glaive killing spree"
(last time i managed to get the troll award using just 6 glaives...)

Worst sort are the players that do not communicate. My feeling is that this often coincides with category 3 "Permanubs".

Everyone should be a helper. This tag would just mean 'not a troll'.

Please don't turn this into a thread about trolls, they never lead to anything useful.

I think something to designate the best players on a team as leaders would be good. If people knew who to listen to there would be more teamwork and games would be more fun. Maybe have different numbers of designated leaders depending on team size. 2v2-4v4 has 1 leader, 5v5-8v8 has 2 and 8v8+ has 3? Those designated to lead would be selected based on team elo. There may be problems if there are, for example, 2 2k elo players in a team of 9 who get selected to command and the third is 1650 elo, so a minimum elo difference between leaders may be in order. Thoughts?
