I think you were just too greedy and seemed to expect cheaper armies to beat more expensive ones.

* Rover sent out an expanding Mason very early on, send their commander in a different direction and, did not make any Lotus.

* Rover loses a few Scorchers to chasing Kodachis but by 3:00 have the Kodachi under control and almost have the same economy as Tank (since Tank built a Lotus and only expanded with a commander).

I
assume
you
know
this,
but
I'll
reiterate
because
it
is
important.
Armies
tend
to
fight
better
if
the
enemy
is
running
towards
them
rather
than
if
they
are
running
towards
the
enemy.
Lotus
is
great
partially
because
you
can't
beat
it
by
running
away,
so
defending
one
with
your
army
creates
conflicting
desires
in
the
attackers.
To
efficiently
defend
your
expansion
you
should
be
waiting
for
the
enemy
to
come
to
you.

You
probably
know
this,
but
the
retreat
advantage
was
a
big
part
of
this
game.
Armies
tend
to
fight
better
if
the
enemy
is
running
towards
them
rather
than
if
they
are
running
towards
the
enemy.
Your
smaller
army
was
enough
to
scare
off
the
larger
army,
but
not
enough
to
force
the
larger
army
to
stop
floating
around
your
territory.
