The Area Mex command queues construction of metal extractors in a given area. The order is placed by dragging the mouse over the area to be covered.

The individual constructions are ordered to the builder from the nearest mex in the area to the farthest, disregarding obstacles. For this reason it may be better to queue several Area Mex orders to guarantee an optimal builder walk path.

Holding Alt and Ctrl while placing an Area Mex order will place four solar collectors around each mex in the area. This protects the extractor and provides Overdrive. On hilly terrain or in the water, wind or tidal generators are used instead.

Holding down the Ctrl key alone will place only one energy structure next to the extractor, while holding Alt by itself will result in two.

You can use the Alt and/or Ctrl modifier key for adding generators to existing metal extractors as well.
