Battle Royale map concept

Just an idea:

A FFA or teams map in which players start along the outside edges. The map itself is basically a giant mountain rising up to a small flat plateau high up the middle of the map. Frequency of metal spots greatly drops off towards the top. Reclaimables around the lower part of the map.

Lava slowly rises until only a peak the size of a single commander remains above. There can be only one

It work if only coms would be present and no other untis player could control. And coms slowly could be upgraded in course of game. To bit harden thing then non player battle units spam around map and make things more difficult. Problem however is limited com weaponary choice.
Similar map in teams was already where lava grow up higher and higher until everything was in lava.

Don't see why it would need to be commanders only, that sounds dull. No air transports, no lobsters..

On the other hand, playing it with com ends game rule would be delicious

I think the map would reward rushing to the center and fortifying there too heavily, which means the game would start with a scramble to the top. Probably would come down mostly to luck which commander wins out.

The high ground is very stronk in Zero-K, so players who choose to stay down to take the mexes would probably not be able to climb later even with the metal superiority.

Battle Royale games tend to randomize the final location and not show it to players from the beginning precisely to reduce the effectiveness of strategies based around rushing the center and fortifying/bunkering down there, which would otherwise be very dominant.

I guess it could be interesting if the map was very large (so that lots of players could be far apart) and the slope sufficiently gentle as to not make fighting upwards inviable.

Having plentiful reclaimables in the low areas could be a fair disincentive to rush the top at start.

Putting spines and other sharp vertical obstacles around the top could be done to obscure lines of fire from the top plateau further.

Also seems like fortifying the top in FFA is asking to get siloed/tremored out by the richer players who stayed low.

Those are fair points. Guess we'd have to see it in action.

What if everyone had an orbital platform where they could build their base and deploy units, and the fighting on the ground was over metal income and perhaps even some sort of victory points or area control. This would allow the lava to wipe the map occasionally without wiping out bases.

That's not battle royale, but its an interesting concept in itself.

Yeah, for a battle royale the best bet, I think, would be to have the outer edges of the map fall into lava as time passed. Automatic terraforming.

Assuming that is implementable, that's an interesting idea. It should mean that it would be possible to change the "center" between games as well.

I'm not sure why you're so fixated on "lava". Here's something that is not lava: http://zero-k.info/Maps/Detail/59167

As this is entirely decoupled from a flat plane with altitude zero, you can have fairly arbitrary shapes for the kill-volume, and you can change it in real time.

Lava is cool, I played SMW as a child so now I perpetually want to drop things into lava.

What's in that map, meteor showers?

Lava rising up a mountain just came to mind as an intuitive way to show the shrinking play area.

The commander-ends rule helps to gives the feel of a player avatar in the game mode.

I also like the concept of having a few other high plateaus around the map... but not as high as the central one. This gives the option of having end game bases elsewhere (and the game rules forcing those players to aggress on the centre else they eventually get consumed).
