I mean... won't it be awesome to play as nomad? You can bring your own power generator and it can power radar jammer continuously even when your base destroyed. With that you could also build unit on-the-go and scavenge wreck for metal, and do some guerilla tactic to annoy your opponent and they never catch you! hahaha

Mobile power generator? haha lucky you we already have such great thing xponen! of course at adequate price, stack 7 energy cells and cloaker and here you go, reclaim!

From what i recall is that everything a com does can also be done by a unit. But no unit makes energy (ok cons yeye...) and is mobile.

cool idea! I would make it mobile fusions, and make them hover so it could be done on seamaps too

So you can make 1000 cons and power 1 cloaker ;) OK it fine make units but it must cost 4x as static fusion. And then everybody will forget that unit.

metal extractors that can morph to walking forms?

What about walking factories or flying factories better! we had such idea didint we? with fast shielded moving doors so factory fly then pooop units right onto enemy base = win

Or better jumpbots

jumping factory, planes

flying factory, spiders crawling factory and so on gg

And by the way metal extractor is actually big it may look small.

I like this, you may create a Zero-K mod of such experimental gameplay. Also, you cans still call the commander from server, I did modify a lot - including general 30% + range apply to most units.

It should simply cost 1.5x the cost of fusions

It is fun to watch in FFA when:
a smaller team got to rebuild their base (after being destroyed by a raiding team) because that team forgot to occupy this area and was occupied with another battle...

With mobile-power-generator such action will be more frequent because a small nomad team (in FFA) will be able to build units on-the-go and retake undefended position back from their attacker. Without the generator the nomad team would take too long to retake such position...

I mean (err) what I saw was a team that do a come-back because the enemy forgot about them... That was fun.

Such generators are possible but we would have to be careful not to trivialise existing mechanics. In TA every possible unit was added and I think we still have the same mindset so if a model was made it would probably be included. It is then up to efficiency balancing to keep static fusions useful.

Also I'm unsure if it could be connected to the power grid. The current implementation of graph modification is lazy and probably insufficiently fast. This would have to be improved or the inability to Overdrive could be a balancing factor (and consistent with other mobile sources of energy).

"From what i recall is that everything a com does can also be done by a unit."

Comm base metal and energy production is an exception. Some income smooths the start of the game and the income cannot go anywhere else. I don't want 'disembodied income' that is tied directly to the existence of a player.

XTA had a mobile fusion at one point, or does it still have it? Anyone with XTA experience, please share your views :)

XTA haves it. Although it is only used before you get income to make more expensive and efficient fusions and requires t2 vehicle tech.

In Zero-K I have a hard time to see the point of it. If it is less efficient than standard fusions then why make it unless you risk losing your base? If you are about to lose your base then you are propably about to lose the game aswell.

Although if they provide a power grid i think they could be pretty useful for creeping porc or be transported to different locations.

hmm mobile power grid sounds very interesting.

Considering how taking the lead in a kill-thr-middle ffa often brings nasty counterattacks, I could see use for this.... It would have to provide storage too, since usually you switch to a reclamation-based eco after such an event.

Don't bother with grid support, though. Too much trouble for something you'll be hiding away from contested metallicious areas. also useful for singleplayer missions that are based on invasion scenarios.

I'm not sure I like the idea, but if it was implemented, I'd expect mobile cloaks (and maybe shields) to require proximity with the power source instead of getting wireless power, and maybe other units would also require "local power"... that would make the unit uniquely useful and not just something useful in fringe situations
