On a different note, can we fix these annoying explosion cutoffs?

They make almost all explosions look poor.

it´s not poor, it´s a feature....
i mean, a lot of people will think i am trolling now, BUT:
the unpolished graphics , the constant fps-drops + lag, the bugs...
it all adds to zero-k´s old soviet-truck-charme.
"it will work, somehow"

Yes we scan! Those "cutoffs" are caused by `groundflash` CEG particle clipped into (newly) deformed ground geometry.

There are two fix approaches to this:
- Eliminate groundflashes and replace them with proper explosion lights. In my opinion, dynlights completely obsolete groundflashes in the vast majority of cases where they are used to emulate light, rather than to emulate slag. Groundflashes are also bad because they cannot do anything in air, and often units are hit in tall parts - which kills part of any effect that relies on them.

- Fix groundflash in engine.

Maybe black mesa.

How would you do the shockwave with dynamic lighting? I wager it's not possible.

There should be a way to properly draw effects on the ground (there are other use cases besides blasts of light)

I'm not 100% sure, but you may want to check the stencil stuff used for overdrive circles

EDIT: I'm 100% sure, the same method won't easily work.

How much will you wager? What are the exact criteria?

I'd wager 24 hours work on a Spring project related thing of the winner's choosing.

Just fully replicate the existing effect or do it better (e.g. allow light to shine on objects).
Produce this in 2 months or less from the time you take the bet (1st of April as the latest).

I think groundflashes should be fixed in the engine. Dynamic lights are relatively expensive and fail depending on map brightness. To use more dynamic lights we would need a fixed map palette.
